what makes a coffee cake a coffee cake? well, either it’s got coffee in it (this one doesn’t, but looking back, it would be a great idea. however i do have an upcoming recipe that contains coffee – prepare yourselves, it’s amazing), or, it’s just a cake that you eat with coffee, probably with breakfast or brunch. it’s usually spiced with cinnamon (check) and got a sort of streusel (check).

For those of you who read this blog regularly, you will know that macarons are one of my obsessions. Some of you may remember a couple of my early attempts ( here , here , and here ), then the epiphany of the class at Lenôtre in Paris. Following that class, I had a number of successes and I found the recipe to be very similar to Helene’s (of Tartelette blog ) and I used a combination of the Lenôtre techniques with Helene’s recipe most of last year, with varying success. Being a Taurean (stubborn) and A-type (a planner) what bugged me about macarons was how unpredictable they were. On many occasions I have wanted to make them for dinner parties or gifts but given the fact that I never knew if it was going to be a “feet” kinda day, I always chose something else.
How to… Do things. I like to show you how to do things… like how to make buttermilk if you’re fresh out. I also like to give you things.
Farewell, blue box. You have been forever replaced. I don’t care if you are ready to eat in less than 30 minutes. Your successor boasts gooey, real cheese bubbling underneath a breadcrumb topping… I’m melting just thinking about it. Have I mentioned before how I adore the Smitten Kitchen blog?
This morning I was looking at my home page and I realized that there is a lot of orange sweet potato and pumpkin going on. Considering the time of year I think it is very fitting. Maybe I should go red and green when Christmas comes around? Got any green and red recipes that I can try out for Christmas?
Happy Wednesday, beautiful people. Factoid for you: Getting my car serviced stresses me. To deal, I totally made Churro Tots. Throw in stress eating and calls to dad, and it some how made everything okay. I encourage it!
Zesty lime juice and cilantro are the key ingredients to creating this light and refreshing salad, no heavy mayonnaise to weigh it down. Made with the freshest ingredients; jumbo shrimp, avocados, tomatoes, red onion, cilantro and chopped jalapeño tossed with some freshly squeezed lime juice and a touch of olive oil. This will be a huge hit at your Cinco de Mayo fiesta or summer bash! Serve this as is for an appetizer, or over lettuce o tostadas for a lunch or light meal. You can easily adapt this to suit your taste by adding more or less cilantro, jalapeño etc.
"Worms in Dirt" may not sound appetizing, but the taste of this easy dessert will make you a believer!
No campfire? No problem!
Mmm... gooey apple cinnamon deliciousness! We’re eating cinnamon apple pecan crumb bars made with local fuji apples and drizzled with cream cheese cinnamon icing. Every year apple season ( aka fall ) brings with it a wave of nostalgia, and I can’t help but reminisce about the autumns of my youth.
Can you believe 2011 is almost over? Where did the year go? 2011 was a pretty great year, especially for this little blog of mine. Over the last 12 months, we have picked up lots of new friends along the way.
Certain things happen when you bake cookies that taste like muffins. Cookies become breakfast food. Midnight snacks too. You pass them off as two servings of fruit. Or three. You sleep-eat cookies.
As far as candy goes, is there anything better than a caramel, chocolate, and nuts combo? I think not.
