Hakama. Hakama is the generic word for pants.

Hakama

There were several different types of hakama that were worn. Some examples include, but are not limited to, hitatare no hakama (which can be seen above), uwabakama, oguchi, suikan no hakama, and kobakama. There are several others. Hakama can be of varying lengths and fullness with the cheapest being of only two panels per leg. More common hakama were of the four panel variety and instructions for making them are below.

During the Heian Period, hakama that were worn by commoners was the two panel type and would only reach to mid-calf or just lower. The construction of the hakama is quite simple as the front and back panels, at the waist, were the same width. One nice thing that can be done with hakama when it is really hot out is the bottom hem of each leg can be tucked into the waist ties, making them in essence, shorts. *NOTE* The pleats closest to the middle waist seam, in the front, and the pleats in the back. are overlapped by 1/2". よくわからない平安装束ガイドライン. Garb. JAPANESE GARB: An Overview 1 The Kimono was developed in Japan starting in the early 10th Century, when the Ancient Chinese styles were supplanted by the now common kimono style.

garb

This was derived from native work garments which better suited the climate, lifestyles and aesthetics of the Japanese, This was the late Heian or Fugiwara, period (897-1185). The earliest form of the kimono is the Kosode (small sleeve garment). Originally, it was a generally worn, plain undergarment. The farmers, crafters & merchant class continued to wear their simple two-piece garments: the Happi, a knee length top tied at the waist and loose trousers just below the knee. In cold weather, the longer kosode would be worn. During the Heian period, the men of the nobility and imperial household retained some of the ceremonial styles of China, wearing the kosode as an undergarment- Kariginu. The lady's garments became very simple. 1338-1568 was the Muromachi period. By Mistress Ella Gajewi von Pommern, O.P.

Men traditionally wear two general types of hakama - umanori (divided) and andon (undivided). Umanori, " horse riding hakama" are divided like trousers, with a much lower crotch seam that we are familiar with in Western garments.

Andon hakama are skirtlike. Modern umanori hakama incorporate a stiffened back board into the rear waistband, known as a koshi-ita . During the Heian period (795-1192 CE) women of the court classes wore nagabakama , a type of hakama with hems so long the wearer walked on them, usually red in color. Hakama for women fell out of fashion some time after the Kamakura period (1193-1333 CE) as they began to wear kosode as an outergarment. AnneLiese's Fibers and Stuff - Japanese Make Women's Hakama. Wear over a white kosode and tie them very high on the waist. There is only one tie on women's hakama. The tie connects the front and back pieces on the left side (with a slight gap between them) and ties in a bow on the right. If you have enough fabric, the front end of the tie should wrap all the way around your waist before tying to the back in a big bow on the right side.
