Telematics Research Lab. The convergence of computers and communications, and the accelerating growth of global information networking is having significant impact on the organization of disaster mitigation, planning and response activities at all levels of society. During the past decade, the Telematics Research Laboratory (TRL) has been participating in these developments through applied disaster communication research in Canada and abroad in collaboration with civil emergency organizations at all levels of government and with the United Nations and international disaster relief organizations.

The main objective of this work is to improve the timely exchange of information among those affected by and/or concerned with disasters and their consequences through the application of cost-effective, reliable and accessible communications and information (telematics) infrastructure. As the Government of Canada’s principal funders of research and scholarship in the higher education sector, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) actively promote a collaborative, vibrant and innovative research enterprise in Canada.

Making research results as widely available and accessible as possible is an essential part of advancing scholarship, promoting intellectual inquiry and critical analysis, and applying knowledge to ensure that practical solutions are found to challenges facing Canadians. CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC are committed to developing a shared approach for improving access to publicly funded research in keeping with internationally recognized best practices, standards and policies for funding and conducting research. The following principles will guide the agencies in promoting access to research results: Advance Knowledge. Home. DEFCON. The defense readiness condition (DEFCON) is an alert state used by the United States Armed Forces.[1] The DEFCON system was developed by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and unified and specified combatant commands.[2] It prescribes five graduated levels of readiness (or states of alert) for the U.S. military, and increase in severity from DEFCON 5 (least severe) to DEFCON 1 (most severe) to match varying military situations.[1] DEFCONs are a subsystem of a series of Alert Conditions, or LERTCONs, that also includes Emergency Conditions (EMERGCONs).[3] There is no single DEFCON status for the country, and in fact different branches of the military can be at different levels of DEFCON at the same time.

Levels[edit] DEFCONs vary between many commands and have changed over time,[2] and the United States Department of Defense uses exercise terms when referring to the DEFCONs.[5] This is to preclude the possibility of confusing exercise commands with actual operational commands. History[edit] Radiation Safety. FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) radiation safety programs involve enforcement of mandatory requirements in addition to partnerships and voluntary programs that promote the safe use of radiation-emitting products. The goal of these programs is to ensure that the public and professionals alike are informed of the risks posed by different types of radiation emissions and radiation-emitting products.

It is also to balance the beneficial use of radiation by ensuring that each patient receives the appropriate radiation dose using the appropriate, medically necessary imaging exam at the appropriate time. These programs recognize that we all have a role in promoting radiation safety, so that: This page links to several radiation safety initiatives within FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health.
