Escher Group, the postal counter automation people, has launched a mobile solution to take services usually found in post offices into shops, hotels or directly to the customer’s doorstep. It’s a Windows Mobile device called MobileRiposte that’s supposed to capture data in such a way that it integrates seamlessly with an organization’s back office and deliver a range of services from a single handheld device with the security and reliability of a post office branch office. Escher claims it will open new markets for postal operators and let postmen provide a broader range of products and services than simply delivering the mail. It’s thinking payments, phone top-ups, foreign exchange and ticket and gift cards sales as well as letter or package tracking and banking services.
