It’s defined as the number of words of instruction you receive per price of the equipment, in units of [words/$]. For example, a tea bag in the kitchen has 19 words of instruction and cost about $0.15; resulting in DQ = 126.7. I dug up the DQ’s for some other common things to see if there was some kind of pattern. It turns out that for most things you buy you can count on getting a DQ between one and twenty, or one to twenty words of instruction for every dollar you spend. Lawn mowers (≈8.3), shampoo (≈4.6), cars (≈1.9), acoustic/electric guitars (≈1.5), and laundry dryers (≈17) all fall in this range. To exceed DQ = 20 like the tea bag you need to find something pretty cheap and very complicated, or dirt cheap but warranting directions.
