Israeli navy kills four Palestinians off Gaza coast | World news Israeli navy kills four Palestinians off Gaza coast | World news At least four Palestinians were killed when Israeli navy commandos opened fire on what they said was a squad of militants in diving suits off the coast of Gaza today. The Palestinians "were on their way to carry out an attack in Israel", a military spokesman said. The spokesman declined to give any further details about how the military had identified the men or what they had been doing in the sea. The al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, a militant offshoot of Fatah, said the men killed were members of its marine unit and had been training. One Palestinian was missing, and there were no Israeli casualties. The attack follows a week in which the Israeli navy has faced international criticism for its assault on the Mavi Marmara, a Turkish ship in a flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, in which nine activists were killed.
Iran’s bombastic President Ahmadinejad once again has strutted to the U.N. General Assembly meetings in New York to denounce, whine about and threaten the United States, the West, Israel and various international institutions. Soon after arriving, Ahmadinejad told the Associated Press that “the future belongs to Iran” and that the United States “must recognize that Iran is a big power.” Ahmadinejad’s U.N. Sharks! (And the Military.) Sharks! (And the Military.) The Great White Shark. Live every week like it’s Shark Week. The US military certainly does. Attempting to be topical, this week’s hot doc is a DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) sideshow entitled “Shark Sensory Capabilities.” It explains, essentially, that sharks have a type of “sixth sense:” the ability to sense and understand electromagnetic fields. And of course, the military is willing to pay big money to research this phenomenon with the hope that it will advance the United States’ warfighting capabilities.

Landmarks Panel Clears Way for Ground Zero Mosque Landmarks Panel Clears Way for Ground Zero Mosque A city commission on Tuesday denied landmark status to a building near the World Trade Center site, freeing a group to convert the property into an Islamic community center and mosque that has drawn national opposition. The Landmarks Preservation Commission voted 9-0, saying the 152-year-old building blocks from the site of the Sept. 11 attacks wasn't special or distinctive enough to meet criteria to qualify as a landmark. Commissioners also said that other buildings from the era were better examples of the building's style. National and New York politicians and the Anti-Defamation League have come out in recent weeks against plans for the mosque, saying it disrespects the memory of Sept. 11 victims. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who also chairs the foundation building the Sept. 11 memorial, has defended plans for the mosque.

Nearly 3,000 people died at the World Trade Center on 9/11. But the list of victims keeps growing. Seventy-thousand men and women worked in the ruins at ground zero. Many now suffer from illnesses officially linked to the toxic smoke and dust, including respiratory and gastric diseases. CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley brought some of them together and found out that for them, 9/11 is a day that never ended. John Gallagher was a New York City fire captain on 9/11. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) (Arabic: الجبهة الشعبية لتحرير فلسطين, al-Jabhah al-Sha`biyyah li-Taḥrīr Filasṭīn) is a Palestinian Marxist-Leninist and revolutionary leftist organization founded in 1967. It has consistently been the second-largest of the groups forming the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), the largest being Fatah. Currently the PFLP is boycotting participation in the executive committee of the PLO.[4][5] It considers both the Fatah-led government in the West Bank and the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip as illegal due to the lack of new elections to the Palestinian National Authority since 2006.[6] PFLP is described as a terrorist organization by the United States,[7] Canada,[8] European Union,[9] and Israel[citation needed].
