Cop The Truth. 135 years ago today, some 270 officers and enlisted men of the 7th Cavalry met their fate at the Little Bighorn. This post originally appeared at CTT in 2008. Custer at the Little Bighorn On June 25, 1876, five understrengthed companies of the Seventh Cavalry, lead by Br.Gen. George A. Custer sent one battalion, lead by Major Marcus Reno, in a frontal assault to provoke the Indians into an engagement. The "hostiles" consisted of approximately fifteen hundred warriors, although estimates vary widely.
The Seventh was doomed from the start. The attack by Reno's Battalion stalled when they were confronted by large numbers of Indians, both mounted and dismounted. Benteen's Battalion arrived and reinforced Reno's men, despite receiving written orders to join Custer with the pack train. The two battalions remained on the bluff until they were reinforced by another column of cavalry. Custer, however, encountered overwhelming numbers of Indians and was rapidly surrounded. BLACKFIVE. The Captain's Journal. I Will Plant You a Lilac Tree « A Thousand Splendid Pages. The man who found the Nuremberg Laws « The Cotton Boll Conspiracy. Seventy-five years ago today, German Fuhrer Adolf Hitler signing the original Nuremberg Laws, spelling out the “Law for the Safeguard of German Blood of German Honor” and legalizing persecution of Jews. These laws stripped Jews of their German citizenship; forbade marriage and sex between citizens of “German blood” and Jews; and established the swastika as the German flag while forbidding Jews to display it.
Announced at a rally in Nuremberg in September 1935 and quickly rubber-stamped by the Reichstag, they provided the legal pretext for the dehumanizing of Jews that eventually led to Auschwitz, Treblinka, Belzec and the other Nazi camps in which millions of Jews perished. Those documents were discovered nearly a decade after they were signed, in the closing days of World War II, in late April 1945. Martin Dannenberg, a US Army intelligence officer, came across an envelope sealed with red swastika embossments inside a bank vault. General George S. Like this: Like Loading... The Imprudence of Comparing to Hitler « Braden's Take on the Matter. This past weekend, I took the opportunity to visit the Holocaust Museum while I was in Washington, DC.
As I recall, one of the earliest exhibits was devoted to the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party. The Nazis’ repeated use of antisemitic propaganda eventually gained a foothold in a nation recently shamed and defeated in World War I. But to say the very least, there are no words, no reasonable justification for the unspeakable and horrid evils that the Nazis perpetrated upon the Jews, the handicapped, homosexuals, and various other groups in the Holocaust. If anyone has the chance to see this museum, I would highly recommend it.
One of many benefits of visiting a place like this is having a chance to put our current state of affairs in perspective. As a conservative, it has always bothered me when someone on the left evokes Hitler or the Nazi party in comparison to someone on the right. Have we watered down the nature of this history so much or are these comparisons truly sincere? The Imprudence of Comparing to Hitler « Braden's Take on the Matter. Maria Mandel signed orders for 500,00 women and children to be gassed at Auschwitz « Scrapbookpages Blog. A couple of years ago, I was at Barnes & Noble, standing in the history section, trying to find an interesting book to buy. Standing next to me was a young woman who was also looking for a book, and she seemed to be perplexed. I offered to help her find a book. She told me that she was a college student and she had been assigned to write a paper on an important woman in the history of Nazi Germany.
For a split second, I thought to myself: there were no important women in Nazi Germany. At that time, I did not yet know about Maria Mandel, who had signed orders to gas women and children at Birkenau. Here is what Wikipedia says about Maria Mandel: On October 7, 1942, Mandel was assigned to the Auschwitz II Birkenau camp in Poland where she became SS Lagerführerin, a female commandant under (male) SS Kommandant Rudolf Höß. Auschwitz was in the Greater German Reich at that time, but it is now in Poland, so this is only a minor mistake on the Wiki page.

An Israeli MK was there-- -- an impressive guy who had gotten arrested in Eastern Europe for teaching Hebrew before moving to Israel and becoming a politician there. ...There were three protesters, who I think came off as pretty crazy. Who indeed? Let us begin at the beginning, with an email sent by well-known local gadfly, David Rolde (link goes to a search in the archives here), that appeared on several local "anti-Israel" email lists, inviting people to come protest the Holocaust commemoration event.
REMEMBER THE NAKBA! In solidarity, RAMSEY YOUSEF CLARK. February 20, 2003: The Rev. Elizaphan Ntakirutimana, 78, the former head of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in western Rwanda, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for aiding and abetting genocide. His son, Dr. Gérard Ntakirutimana, 45, who worked at the church's hospital, received a total sentence of 25 years for the same charges and for shooting two people to death.Ramsey Clark, the former United States attorney general, who was defense counsel for the elder Mr. Ntakirutimana, called the verdict "a tragic miscarriage of justice. " He said both men would appeal. The Serbians committed genocide against the Kosovars and that was why millions of Kosovars left Kosovo, and its surrounding areas.
One would have expected that RAMSEY CLARK, whose name appears as a sponsor of many organizations that claim to be against genocide would have condemned the Serbs, however, just the opposite was true. Read these extracts from Ken and the rise of Socialist Action In October 2007, the Evening Standard published a list of the 25 most influential people running London.[1] Livingstone headed the list which contained the names of 13 other individuals who worked directly or indirectly for the mayor, four of the people on the list were Livingstone's closest mayoral advisory they have also been members of a tiny Trotskyist party which has worked closely and discreetly with Ken Livingstone for more than 20 years.
Socialist Action is an organisation so discreet and secretive that it does not even admit its own existence and its members will not confirm they have ever belonged to the group. When I interviewed Ken Livingstone about Socialist Action for this book, he pressed me for evidence at first, before acknowledging its existence and the importance of the role played by those who had been associated with it . Through late 1993 and early 1994, the ARA deteriorated rapidly.
