Causes of the American Revolution - Examining the Causes of the American Revolution

The American Revolution began in 1775 as open conflict between the united North American thirteen colonies and Great Britain. By the Treaty of Paris that ended the war in 1783, the colonies had won their independence. With this treaty, the British parliament officially recognized the sovereignty of the United States While no one event can be pointed to as the actual cause of the revolution, the war began as a disagreement over the way in which Great Britain treated the colonies versus the way the colonies felt they should be treated. Americans felt they deserved all the rights of Englishmen. Continue reading below our video The road to revolution built slowly over time. In the end, the American Revolution grew out of increasing restrictions placed upon the colonies by the British.

Northwest Ordinance (1787)

The Northwest Ordinance, adopted July 13, 1787, by the Second Continental Congress, chartered a government for the Northwest Territory, provided a method for admitting new states to the Union from the territory, and listed a bill of rights guaranteed in the territory. Following the principles outlined by Thomas Jefferson in the Ordinance of 1784, the authors of the Northwest Ordinance (probably Nathan Dane and Rufus King) spelled out a plan that was subsequently used as the country expanded to the Pacific. The copy of the ordinance on this site is a printed document, dated in the last paragraph and signed by the secretary of Congress, Charles Thomson.
