EAST Africa is poised to lead the rest of Africa in developing infrastructure for the nascent oil and gas industry, a new report by audit and consultancy group Ernst & Young indicates. The 'Oil & Gas: driving sustainable growth' report projects a strong growth in associated midstream and downstream infrastructure to accompany sustained growth in the upstream segment in Africa. It indicates East Africa stands out because of massive size of oil reserves in war-ravaged South Sudan and west-neighbouring Uganda, 40 trillion cubic feet (TCF) upwards of gas in Tanzania and about 70 trillion TCF of gas in Mozambique. The existing narrow gauge railway in Kenya was built in the 19th century and only runs to Uganda whereas the faster new line is designed to go on to Rwanda and South Sudan and is aimed at cutting the hefty costs of trade between east African nations.
