It is no surprise that after independence, club membership became a sign that one had made it and half a century later, exclusive members’ clubs are still populated by top businessmen and politicians. The rise of the middle class has however expanded membership and as more Africans are able to afford membership and greens fees, demand for courses is increasing and influencing what the market is providing. The East Africa Region has various projects underway. The new Lamu Port in Kenya costing $5.3 billion (Reuters.com) and the Bagamoyo port in Tanzania costing $11 billion (The East African) are examples of countries preparing for the ever-growing port capacity needs. When completed in 2017, Bagamoyo will become the biggest container terminal in Africa: with a planned cargo of 20 million TEU a year; it will be 20 times larger than the port at Dar-es- Salaam and likely to rank in the top 10 terminals in the world in terms of volume capacity.

Reconfiguring port layout, and increasing berths at existing ports and conducting dredging more often, have been other strategies that numerous ports have employed to meet this need. LAPSSET, the Lamu Port, South Sudan, Ethiopia Transport Corridor (LAPSSET) is a flagship project of Kenya’s Vision 2030, the Kenyan government’s national development plan which, like Ethiopia’s Vision 2025, aims to transform Kenya into a mid-level economy with10 percent annual growth.

The corridor will link Lamu on Kenya’s coast to Juba, South Sudan, 1,700 km away, and it aims to combine the development of a new port at Lamu, 2,240 kms of oil pipeline from Lamu to South Sudan and road and railway links to the west of Kenya, then into South Sudan as well as plans for road and rail links to Addis Ababa via Moyale. It also involves plans for the construction of an oil refinery, three international airports at Lamu, Isiolo and Lokichoggio, and three ‘resort cities’ along the line of the railway at Lamu, Isiolo and Lake Turkana. Any of these elements would have a significant impact on Kenyan development; in combination they could transform the whole region. Road links are on schedule. East Africa's oil and gas infrastructure to take lead in Africa. EAST Africa is poised to lead the rest of Africa in developing infrastructure for the nascent oil and gas industry, a new report by audit and consultancy group Ernst & Young indicates. The 'Oil & Gas: driving sustainable growth' report projects a strong growth in associated midstream and downstream infrastructure to accompany sustained growth in the upstream segment in Africa. It indicates East Africa stands out because of massive size of oil reserves in war-ravaged South Sudan and west-neighbouring Uganda, 40 trillion cubic feet (TCF) upwards of gas in Tanzania and about 70 trillion TCF of gas in Mozambique. Expected new infrastructural development include terminals, storage capacity and the critical pipelines and refineries.

China, East African leaders sign up for new rail link. World Bulletin / News Desk East African leaders and China formally signed agreements on Sunday related to the construction of a new multi-billion dollar railway to run from the Kenyan port of Mombasa to Nairobi and on to neighbouring states. The deals were signed in Nairobi on the last stage of an Africa tour by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, although Kenya's president, Uhuru Kenyatta, had already signed up to the deal during his state visit to Beijing last year. "The costs of moving our people and our goods ... across our borders will fall sharply," Kenyatta told a news conference with the Chinese and African leaders on Sunday. The existing narrow gauge railway in Kenya was built in the 19th century and only runs to Uganda whereas the faster new line is designed to go on to Rwanda and South Sudan and is aimed at cutting the hefty costs of trade between east African nations.

Kenyatta has previously said the new railway will cut freight costs to 8 U.S. cents a tonne per km from 20 cents now. Facebook to be made free on all mobile networks across East Africa.
