Same-sex marriage laws linked to fewer youth suicide attempts, new study says. Supporters of gay marriage wave the rainbow flag outside the Supreme Court in July 2015.
Photo by Joshua Roberts/Reuters State legalization of same-sex marriage appears to be linked to a decrease in adolescent suicide, based on a new analysis published today in JAMA Pediatrics. The results give more context to the potential effects of social policy on mental health. The researchers found that suicide attempts by high school students decreased by 7 percent in states after they passed laws to legalize same-sex marriage, before the Supreme Court legalized it nationwide in 2015.
Among LGB high school students, the decrease was especially concentrated, with suicide attempts falling by 14 percent. But in states that did not legalize same-sex marriage, there was no change. Suicide is the 10th-leading cause of death in the U.S. and the second for people aged 10 to 24. As a psychiatrist who has treated students at several colleges, Schwartz said he has seen the painful effects of stigma firsthand.
Worst of 2016: Picking the year’s 10 biggest anti-LGBT foes wasn’t easy. 2016 was a challenging year for LGBT rights.
A year after the Supreme Court legalized equal marriage 5-4 vote, an unprecedented number of bills targeting queer and transgender people were introduced to state legislatures. According to the Human Rights Campaign, more than 200 anti-LGBT bills were debated by states across the U.S., including Massachusetts, Illinois, Louisiana, and Montana. Many failed, unable to make it out of committee or vetoed by state governors. Others passed. The 10 public figures listed below were those most active in creating a climate of bigotry and hate this year, in which a backlash to LGBT equality flourished. 1.
Pat McCrory, the embattled governor of North Carolina, earned his spot at the top of this list by passing House Bill 2, the so-called “bathroom bill” that targets the trans community for discrimination. This monster McCrory created, though, lives on in his absence. 2. As the governor of Indiana, Pence went even further. 3. 4. 'This Wasn't the Deal': Political Chaos in North Carolina as GOP Refuses to Repeal Discriminatory 'Bathroom Bill' Photo Credit: CLS Design / Shutterstock.com The Republican-led North Carolina legislature adjourned a special session on Wednesday evening without voting on a full repeal of the controversial “bathroom bill,” HB2.
That repeal was expected to follow the surprise repeal of a nondiscrimination ordinance in Charlotte, the state’s largest city, earlier this week. After deliberating all morning and into the afternoon in a closed caucus session, Republican lawmakers finally emerged with a bill to repeal HB2, which has become nationally infamous as a symbol of regressive anti-LGBT legislation. But Republicans hold supermajorities in both chambers of the North Carolina legislature, so perhaps it’s not surprising that their repeal bill came with a catch: Local municipalities are barred from passing any laws related to employment or public accommodations for six months.
Linda Harvey Calls On HHS Nominee Tom Price To Crack Down On Homosexuality. Mission America president Linda Harvey today hailed Donald Trump’s selection of Georgia Republican Rep.
Tom Price to head the Department of Health and Human Services, and urged Price to use his role to begin “dismantling” the “mythological ‘gay’ identity.” Writing in WorldNetDaily, Harvey expressed hope that Price, who has a history of hostility to LGBT rights and is a member of a radical HIV/AIDS denialist group, will reverse the LGBT rights gains that took place during the Obama administration and use the federal agency, and the Centers for Disease Control in particular, to withdraw grants from LGBT-allied groups like GLSEN and Planned Parenthood, end its use of terms like “males who have sex with males,” and send the message to gay people: “Don’t have anal sex, period.” The limits of corporate activism: Why a business boycott won’t stop Trump from repealing LGBT rights.
Corporate America proved itself a crucial, if unexpected, ally in fighting the repeal of LGBT rights across the country in 2016, but will intervention from business leaders be enough to stop Donald Trump?
The power of corporate activism may soon be put to the test after Rep. Mike Lee (R-Utah) announced that Congressional Republicans plan to reintroduce the First Amendment Defense Act in 2017. Attack On Gay-Straight Alliances Reveals Religious Right's Ugly Anti-Gay Heart. Many Religious Right activists and leaders feign hurt and indignation at being described as anti-gay.
They’re not anti-anybody, they insist, they are just in favor of “traditional values” or “biblical marriage.” But others make it clear that they see homosexuality itself as the problem, and want to do anything they can to prevent LGBT people from gaining cultural acceptance and legal recognition, and their words and actions reveal the ugly anti-gay heart of the Religious Right movement. One of these activists is Brian Camenker, a Massachusetts-based activist who operates the anti-gay hate group MassResistance.
During a one-day anti-gay summit that preceded the World Congress of Families in Utah last October, Camenker disagreed with activists who call for “speaking the truth in love" to LGBT people and their allies. Gov. McCrory: LGBT Groups Are Waging 'Coordinated National Effort' to 'Slander' North Carolina. North Carolina Governor Ensuring He Becomes Face of His Anti-LGBT Law Change the conversation, change the world Share this Gov.
Pat McCrory's office on Monday issued a strongly accusatory statement claiming that LGBT and civil rights groups and the media are trying to "slander" North Carolina. The comments are in response to a lawsuit filed early Monday morning in federal court challenging the North Carolina Republican first term governor's law that voids LGBT nondiscrimination ordinances in nine locales and prevents any town, city, or county from enacting LGBT protection ordinances.
“The governor respects the right of any legal challenges; however, he does not respect the continued distortion of the facts by the groups challenging this law and by many members of the state and national media,” the governor’s press secretary, Graham Wilson, said in a statement. North Carolina just lost some of its charm: There’s no way the governor’s backward measures legalizing discrimination against LGBTQ individuals can stand. Shortly after coming out of the closet in college, I traveled from Washington state to North Carolina as a prospective law student at Duke.
It was 2005 and I had my concerns about being an out gay man in the South. But those worries were partially allayed by the warmth and charm of the people I met. I recall my first meal in North Carolina, where I was introduced to the glorious world of Southern fried food by way of the hushpuppy, all the while being referred to genteelly as “honey.” I could get used to this, I thought. North Carolina discrimination law violates US constitution, experts warn. North Carolina’s new discrimination law could be violating the US constitution, in addition to dealing a serious blow to LGBT people by preventing any city from creating anti-discrimination protections, experts have warned.
The law, which was rushed through on Wednesday, requires public institutions to designate bathrooms and locker rooms to only be used by people in accordance with their biological sex, which violates constitutional privacy protections. “If they [transgender people] comply with the law every time they use the bathroom they will be outed because their outward gender expression conflicts with the gender assigned at the bathroom and that could expose them to violence and discrimination,” said Scott Skinner-Thompson, an acting assistant professor at New York University’s School of Law.
The US constitution prevents the state from disclosing information such as a person’s LGBT identity, which is why similar laws are now being challenged in court. North Carolina’s Repugnant New Anti-LGBT Law Is Only the Tip of the Iceberg. Photo Credit: Wikipedia/W Edward Callis III All blatantly bigoted laws are repugnant, but some feel more repugnant than others. So it was with North Carolina, whose legislature just passed a breathtakingly hateful law targeting its LGBT residents.
House Bill 2, also known as the “Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act,” is notable mostly for the sheer breadth of its discriminatory intent. It takes the by-now-familiar tactic of barring trans people from using the bathroom that aligns with their gender identity and adds to it a blanket ban on any locality’s attempt to craft anti-discrimination laws for LGBT people. (The bill was drafted in response to the institution of just such an ordinance by the city of Charlotte.)
State legislators were so eager to pass the bill that they held a special session for the first time in 35 years. That the bill, and all others like it, is odious and likely unconstitutional is very clear. Patheos. Thank you for your interest in Patheos newsletters! A California transgender man plans to take legal action against a barbershop after the owner refused to give the customer a haircut, stating that he only serves “men” due to his religious beliefs. Kendall Oliver – a US army sergeant who identifies as a transgender man and uses the gender-neutral pronoun “they” – said a business called The Barbershop in Rancho Cucamonga in southern California, refused to give them a haircut this week, saying the shop doesn’t offer cuts to “women”. Oliver said the rejection was painful and insulting to LGBT people, and legal experts say the denial of service was also a clear violation of California anti-discrimination laws. “It did hurt my feelings, and I don’t want anyone else to experience that,” said Oliver, 24, who lives nearby in Mira Loma, which is about 50 miles east of Los Angeles.
“There is a separation of church and state.
