This article originally appeared on AlterNet.
Back before 9/11 indelibly linked Islam with terrorism, back before the top association to “Catholic priest” was “pedophile,” most Americans—even nonreligious Americans—thought of religion as benign. I’m not religious myself, people would say, but what’s the harm if it gives someone else a little comfort or pleasure. Back then, people associated Christianity with kindness and said things like, “That’s not very Christian of him,” when a person acted stingy or mean; and nobody except Evangelical Christians knew the difference between Evangelicalism and more open, inquiring forms of Christianity.
Those days are over. Islam will be forever tainted by Islamist brutalities, by images of bombings, beheadings, and burkas. Theodore Shoebat Prays That God Will Guide President Trump To ‘Enact Laws That Will Put Sodomites To Death’ Extremist anti-LGBT activist Theodore Shoebat was initially a very ardent Donald Trump supporter, but he turned on the GOP presidential nominee when he held up a rainbow flag at a rally in Colorado, after which Shoebat began calling for Trump to be put to death.
But now that Trump was won the election, Shoebat is back to supporting him, posting a video last night in which he declared that he hopes that God will guide President Trump to pass laws putting gays and abortion providers to death. “God bless Donald Trump,” Shoebat said, “and may God guide him to do righteousness. Website? Me either. At least not until today, and now that I know it exists, I fear for women across this country because it asserts that married Christian women must submit to their spouse, no matter if they want to or not. Historian: The Koran Is NOT More Violent Than The Bible. Christians Have 'Holy Amnesia' Image Via YouTube Since the Paris attacks, all we’ve heard from the chattering class on the far right is that Islam is a religion of violence which mandates jihad, or holy war.
They even say the Koran is rife with incidents of violence and calls to kill all enemies of Islam. Which, if you didn’t know, is utter horse manure. But most of these self-appointed “experts” are reading the Koran selectively and cherry-picking certain verses which support their ludicrous assertions. What, you may wonder (as I did), do religious historians say when you ask them to compare the Bible and the Koran? What Do The Experts Say? Penn State professor Philip Jenkins has written several books on religious history, and he studies the historical background of Christianity. “By the standards of the time, which is the 7th century A.D., the laws of war that are laid down by the Quran are actually reasonably humane. The Very Strange History of the Easter Bunny. Photo Credit: Benjamin Thompson/Flickr Creative Commons While you’re biting the heads off your chocolate bunnies this weekend, you might wonder how cartoon rabbits became so central to our Easter celebrations.
It’s tempting to assume that because there’s no biblical basis for the Easter Bunny, rabbits and hares have no religious significance – but that’s just not the case. Leviticus 11:6 states that the hare is an unclean animal: “The hare, for even though it chews the cud, it does not have divided hoofs; it is unclean for you"”, but in Christian art, it is regularly associated with rebirth and resurrection. In fact, the symbol of a circle of three hares joined by their ears has been found in a number of churches in Devon.
Like much of our cultural “bunny” symbolism, the meaning of this image remains mysterious – and The Three Hares Project has been set up to research and document occurrences of the ancient symbol, examples of which have been found as far away as China. A Bible scholar has recently created a major stir among religious folks, for his assertion that Eve was not created from Adam’s rib, but from Adam’s penis bone.

Photo Credit: Allen / Flickr North Carolina tow truck driver and self-proclaimed “conservative Christian” Ken Shupe followed the example of Jesus on Monday by providing roadside assistance to disabled Bernie Sanders supporter Cassandra McWade even though Shupe himself professes loyalty to God’s Own Party.
Oh. Wait. I got that backward. Shupe saw the Sanders sign in McWade’s car and drove off, leaving her stranded on the roadside—the exact opposite of what Jesus teaches in the New Testament story of the Good Samaritan. In the Gospel According to Luke, a lawyer and member of the religious establishment tries to trap Jesus by asking him how to attain eternal life. In response, Jesus tells one of the most repeated stories in the Bible: “He died in the blackest way possible — with his hands up, with his mother watching”: This poet demolishes Megyn Kelly for calling Jesus a white man. If Slavery is Good Enough for the Bible, it's Good Enough for Pastor Anderson. Baptist Pastor Steven Anderson believes that the Bible is the word of God and feels that should be enough to satisfy any true believers of its merit, no matter what topic is being addressed, even slavery. “The Bible is right about everything, no matter what the subject,” Anderson said in a sermon clip posted to his Youtube channel.
“If it says something in conflict with what we believe, we need to change what we believe and get on the bible’s program.” Pastor Anderson openly mocks the idea of any of his Christian audience members having a dissenting opinion about anything God has, supposedly, clearly explained for them. Religious Fascism In The U.S–Adults Getting Married Is Their Business Only.
