The posting of each pearl does not necessarily mean it is recommended or endoresed by the Ohio Department of Education. These pearls are simply intended to be shared with educators of all kinds in the field as idea starters for what 'could' be used in a classroom.

We want to recognize this list is not all encompasing of all resources; instead it is simply the beginning of what 'could' be used. Ultimately, the decision as to whether or not any of the pearls will be useful in the classroom remains the decision of the educator him/herself.

The OhioELA group welcomes any feedback you might have about these resources. Please feel free to post comments on any pearl so other educators can read your feedback as they evaluate these resources. Children's Literature Assembly. Criteria for CCSS. The principal was reacting to what he had just witnessed: his 9th grade students engaging in their first-ever Socratic Seminar, facilitated by my colleague and wife Denise a few years ago in a Louisiana district.

It was a poignant moment (even though the students might have taken offense), since their chatter and body language made clear that they, too, were pleased with what they had done. While it is easy to have a laugh or wince at the Principal’s remarks, I think we all too easily forget how often we have all said such things.

“Would you please think about this!?” We sometimes go further and speak cynically (if elliptically): “You know, he just doesn’t have much going on upstairs,” we say to a colleague who knowingly nods. I was reminded of all this while in a 5th-grade ELA class recently. Inferential Inferencing We talk about inferences. “Teach them what?” Oh.
