Indeed, I thought I’d never make it back to freelancing after almost losing the shirt on my back about five years ago.

As we all do, I tried to ‘stem’ the losses and offset freelance earnings by jumping on bandwagon after bandwagon, dreaming up fanciful ways to supplement my income from online channels. All this gave me though was a cover for procrastination. This ‘opportunity seeking’ took me away from committing to the work which really mattered and which would potentially have turned my fortunes around. Some say treat failure as a friend which is easy for lofty billionaires, techy folk spending venture capital and ultra-successful types to say but when you’re staring down the barrel of a gun (cleverly disguised as a red letter, peering out of an envelope marked ‘payment overdue’) such statements are empty and meaningless. Failure is no friend of mine 1. This is a biggie, something I encounter a lot when I speak to Freelancelift members.

Advanced web typography: Responsive web typography. Posted on 09 April 2014 • 4 comments Responsive Web Design is not merely concerned with layout — done properly, there are a number of considerations one should take into account with typography. After all, the web is 99% typography, right? Responsive body type For me, my principle concern around web type in a responsive world is all about measure. After all, when you have viewports that can grow (or shrink) indefinitely, the length of a line can very quickly become uncomfortably long (or short).

Robert Bringhurst suggests that the optimum measure is around 45 to 75 characters per line. For the last year or two, my approach to media queries (with particular reference to measure) has been to: increase the font size, ordecrease the padding on the containing element, ordo both. You can see this in effect on this very site. And, if you haven’t done so already, take a look at using viewport units for viewport-sized typography.
