Haters Gonna Hate, As Shown On A Map : Code Switch. Note: This post contains strong language, including racial and ethnic slurs. Geography professor Monica Stephens has spent a lot of time putting haters on the map . Over at Humboldt State University in California where she is a professor, Stephens and a team of undergraduate students spent a year sorting through racial slurs on Twitter by location. And then she mapped them. That meant searching for words like "nigger" and "fag" and "honkey. " Stephens had a team of undergraduate students who sifted through 150,000 negative tweets. Then Stephens' students went through about 90,000 tweets that used the N word to determine if they were actually negative, she told Tell Me More host Michel Martin. "It tends to be in smaller towns, particularly in the Midwest, the Rust Belt area, more so than the South. Another interesting finding came from Texas.

"Perhaps these are places that have experienced large amounts of job loss over recent years," Stephens told Martin. Take California, for instance. School's 'Redneck Day' sparks anger. PHOENIX -- When members of the student council at an Arizona high school organized a schoolwide "Redneck Day" and encouraged classmates to dress — and spoof — accordingly, they hoped to build school spirit leading up to prom week. Instead, "Redneck Day" at Queen Creek High School has angered African-Americans and civil-rights leaders and touched off a debate about free speech, social stereotypes and good taste.

Tom Lindsey, superintendent of the Queen Creek Unified School District, said the only intent of Wednesday's event was to satirize the A&E reality TV show "Duck Dynasty," which follows a family of duck hunters and entrepreneurs from West Monroe, La. But some students and their family members weren't amused. Among them: the Rev. Ozetta Kirby, pastor of Holy Trinity Community AME Church in Mesa and vice president of the East Valley chapter of the NAACP. "I'm sitting here crying and praying," said Kirby, whose grandson Marcus Still is a 16-year-old junior at the school. The Rev. Texas School Counselor Fired After Insane Facebook Post: Whites “Will Soon Be Wiped From the Earth. Lol.” After the fertilizer plant explosion in Texas, Karon Wright apparently became angry about some of the comments other people on Facebook made about Barack Obama. Then Wright, who was a counselor at Andrew Jackson Middle School in Texas, unwisely wrote the following.

“Its amazing how the “whites” get angry when Obama speaks. Oh well…its most of the whites who is getting blown away. So they will soon be wiped from the earth. Lol.” That didn’t go over well with her school district which called her statement, “highly offensive, insensitive to the tragedy happening to our friends and neighbors in West, and disrespectful to the very human bond that we share with the people of West, especially those who have lost their loved ones.” Shortly thereafter, the school wiped Wright’s name from the school website and unceremoniously fired her. For her part, Wright claims her account was hacked. “My Facebook account was hacked and the statement that was made is not of my character. Let’s hope the Boston Marathon bomber is a white American. Updated: Sirota responds to critics of this piece over here. As we now move into the official Political Aftermath period of the Boston bombing — the period that will determine the long-term legislative fallout of the atrocity — the dynamics of privilege will undoubtedly influence the nation’s collective reaction to the attacks. That’s because privilege tends to determine: 1) which groups are — and are not — collectively denigrated or targeted for the unlawful actions of individuals; and 2) how big and politically game-changing the overall reaction ends up being.

This has been most obvious in the context of recent mass shootings. In those awful episodes, a religious or ethnic minority group lacking such privilege would likely be collectively slandered and/or targeted with surveillance or profiling (or worse) if some of its individuals comprised most of the mass shooters. To know that’s true is to simply consider how America reacts to different kinds of terrorism. Enter the Boston bombing. NCAA Tournament: CBS analyst Doug Gottlieb says he brings the ‘white man’s perspective’ to show before Miami vs. Marquette game; Charles Barkley says comment was 'no big deal' Doug Gottlieb: CBS analyst apologizes after telling panel he's there 'to bring white man's perspective'

Gottlieb made the remark during a pregame segment before the Marquette-Miami game on a panel with Greg Gumbel, Greg Anthony, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley - who are all black. Sitting in the middle, Gottlieb said: 'I don't know why you guys ask me, I'm just here to bring diversity to this set, give kind of the white man's perspective,' he said during the show. White Student Union Claims Towson Has Black-On-White Crime Problem. Get Breaking News First Receive News, Politics, and Entertainment Headlines Each Morning. Sign Up TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) — A student known for causing a bit of controversy on the campus of Towson University is now taking the law into his own hands in an effort to tackle what he believes to be a growing problem of black-on-white crime around campus. Rochelle Ritchie spoke with the student behind the plan. The founder of the White Student Union–which is not recognized by the university–says white women are the biggest target for crime committed by black men.

Matthew Heimbach is not a stranger to stirring up controversy after starting a White Student Union on the campus of Towson University in which members chalked “white power” all over campus. “Towson sends us reports every time a violent crime happens on campus and the one thing we always see is the offender is a black male between 18 and 24,” said Heimbach. “I think it’s something that should be avoided altogether,” said one student. Towson U. Student Patrol Sparks Racism Charges. A plan to have unarmed students patrolling the campus of Towson University on foot has sparked accusations of racism. The planned patrols are the brainchild of senior Mathew Heimbach, who also happens to head a group called the White Student Union. Heimbach has written on his blog that Towson is experiencing a “black crime wave” with “black predators” preying on the “white majority student body.”

"Just like I wouldn't be offended if, when you talk about serial killers, the average serial killer is a blue-collar, educated white male," Heimbach told News4's Jim Rosenfield. "It doesn't offend me to be able to talk about the facts," Heimbach said. Other students disagree. "Certain things are just ingrained in you by your cultural values and what you were taught as a kid," a white student said. "I'm not a future leader of hate," Heimbach said. Heimbach hopes to begin the patrols early next week. The school released the following statement: More Local Stories. Philadelphia Magazine editor faces critics on race article. In his piece, Huber wrote: "We need to bridge the conversational divide so that there are no longer two private dialogues in Philadelphia - white people talking to other whites, and black people to blacks - but a city in which it is OK to speak openly about race.

" The story, however, was criticized as dwelling on negative experiences that whites had with blacks that often fit into racial stereotypes. In a scathing letter, Mayor Nutter last week requested that the Philadelphia Human Relations Commission consider whether the magazine and Huber deserved to be rebuked for the article. Nutter said Huber ignored positive anecdotes "to feed his own misguided perception" that African Americans are "lazy, shiftless, irresponsible, and largely criminal. " Jones ripped Philadelphia Magazine for what he said was the publication's history of racial insensitivity - a contention Nutter also raised in his letter.

"This is the most infuriating thing about it," Jones said. "I was not surprised. " Controversial Article Published In Local Magazine Has Mayor Nutter Asking For Investigation. The article, titled “Being White in Philly,” features a series of interviews with anonymous white residents from different areas of the city who share stories about their interaction with black residents. Mayor Nutter calls the article’s tone “disgusting,” and he’s asked the Human Relations Commission to investigate some of the sensitive racial issues explored in the piece. Nutter spokesman Mark McDonald says this is all about fact finding. “I think he feels that there are enough problems in this article that it warrants a closer look,” McDonald explains. PHRC executive director Rue Landau says the commission shares Mayor Nutter’s concerns, and they were already looking at intergroup relations in the city, particularly in changing communities. Being White in Philly | Philadelphia magazine - Page 2. Early on, during my walks around northern Fairmount, I’m surprised by a couple of things.

One is the international flavor. On a warm Sunday in October, I buttonhole a woman I’ll call Anna, a tall, slim, dark-haired beauty from Moscow getting out of her BMW on an alley just south of Girard College. Anna goes to a local law school, works downtown at a law firm, and proceeds to let me have it when we start talking about race in her neighborhood. “I’ve been here for two years, I’m almost done,” she says. That’s the other surprise: If you’re not an American, the absence of a historical filter results in a raw view focused strictly on the here and now. American whites I talk to in Fairmount have a decidedly different take. One Fairmounter blames herself for her grill being stolen from her backyard, because if you don’t fence it in, she tells me, you’re asking for it. The danger can be a little steeper. He acknowledges that his assailants were black. “No,” she says.
