STEM presentations: Creating a Global Focus on STEM education is a very well-done powerpoint that gives a “big picture” to STEM. The STEM Education Coalition has a whole section of resource links to over 50 different presentations worldwide. The Journal highlights how teachers and administrators are looking for resources to support STEM.

This month we're focusing on STEAM and Critical Thinking, so we wanted to be sure to spotlight products that focus on these themes. This week's list brings us a game that helps kids practice STEM skills, a hands-on app that teaches number concepts, a math game that gives kids business skills, and a game that helps kids think critically and become disease detectives. The Technology Integration Matrix (TIM) illustrates how teachers can use technology to enhance learning for K-12 students.

The TIM incorporates five interdependent characteristics of meaningful learning environments: active, constructive, goal directed (i.e., reflective), authentic, and collaborative (Jonassen, Howland, Moore, & Marra, 2003). The TIM associates five levels of technology integration (i.e., entry, adoption, adaptation, infusion, and transformation) with each of the five characteristics of meaningful learning environments. Together, the five levels of technology integration and the five characteristics of meaningful learning environments create a matrix of 25 cells as illustrated below. We appreciate your feedback. This past year I’ve immersed myself in the Twittersphere amongst thousands of innovative educators and have been actively seeking new and better ways to engage learners. I’ve come across some pretty compelling products, but these are the ones I’m most excited about in 2014. Games, toys and hands-on learning experiences should be in your 21st century teacher/parent toolbox if your intent is to foster a love of learning in your children or students.
