Kota Kinabalu Diving. In 2011 Scuba Junkie, with the support of the Sabah Wildlife Department and the District Officer of Semporna, set up Mabul's first and only Turtle Hatchery.
With increased development on the island, Scuba JunkIe was committed to protecting nesting beaches and relocating nests that are laid in areas where the turtles stand less chance of survival so we sponsored and built the Mabul Turtle Hatchery. All species of Sea Turtle are considered threatened or near threatened by the IUCN and Sabah is a huge breeding area for them with both Hawksbill and Green turtles being encountered in numbers on a daily basis by divers, snorkelers or people just having a morning coffee on the jetty. This program has been immensely successful with well over 2000 hatchlings released so far this year (2012) and more than 1000 turtles in 2011. This is a project everyone at Scuba Junkie is very proud of.
