Social media overtakes entertainment as favourite online activity | Media. Social media has overtaken entertainment as the UK’s favourite activity online, accounting for almost a fifth of the two hours and 51 minutes a day people in the UK on average spend on the web. Social media use – including time on sites such as Reddit or Gawker Media that are built on blog platforms – accounted for nearly 17% of all time online, up from 12.2% a year ago, according to research commissioned by the Internet Advertising Bureau.

Over the same period, the amount of time spent online on entertainment such as watching TV shows or YouTube videos and listening to music has almost halved from 22.1% to 12.4%. The shift appears to be in part driven by people spending more time on their mobiles, as on desktops entertainment accounts for 18% of time online compared to just 8% on smartphones and tablets such as the iPad. On mobile devices, social media accounts for more than 20% of time spent, compared to under 10% on desktop. This month both the London Times and Financial Times have run horror stories about social media. The FT featured its own FT/ICSA Boardroom Bellwether survey which found that just over a third of FTSE350 index companies have never discussed a social media policy, while roughly the same proportion — 37 per cent — regard having a social media strategy as important. The pollsters at the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators commented that this raised eyebrows because reputation risk associated with a bad social press ought to be higher on the list of directors’ concerns.

Reactions from industry to the survey showed how far we all still have to go to get social media onto the corporate agenda. Most of all, industry figureheads noted that boardrooms need to understand we live in a very transparent world and anyone can publish to a mass audience and in doing so bring humiliation to a company and its image. The next time you are about to share a photo, stop and ask yourself this question: Why are you doing it? Be honest. Sometimes we do it to express an idealized sense of self. We want to shape how the world views us. Sometimes we do it because we crave the dopamine high that comes with comments and likes. People are thinking of us! Not often enough, we do so because we want to share authentic moments and stories with people close to us.

Yet, much the way we dress up when we go out to a trendy restaurant – stylish clothes on, sweats left at home – we use filters to dress up our photos when we share them. This is the challenge for social networks. Users x engagement = net attention The goal is to grow net attention. Yogi Berra once commented on a popular restaurant, “Nobody goes there anymore. These products address the engagement side of the net attention equation. . * A notable exception to this is celebrity culture where we have minimal expectations for authenticity. Like this: Social Media Business Statistics, Facts, Figures & Trends 2014 [INFOGRAPHIC] Measuring the success of social media against business objectives. As social media becomes ever more prevalent, companies are increasingly migrating over to this medium for much of their marketing strategies.

However, as a relatively new channel, many businesses are still in the dark about what kind of goals or outcomes they would like to see as a result of their efforts – it could be lead generation marketing, branding your business or any other end goal – as well as how to effectively measure the success of their campaigns. In fact, according to Print in the Mix, nearly 75 percent of companies in a recent survey admitted that measuring the direct impact of social media marketing is very difficult.

Additionally, the Quarterly Digital Intelligence Briefing: Managing and Measuring Social report suggested that nearly two-thirds of responding companies said they had no clear social media objectives at all. Numbers like these suggest that some companies are ultimately lost about what to do with their social media campaigns. Martin Jones is a Sr. How small business can keep social media cowboys at bay. Take Advantage Of The Media - Seminar. The Google Plus Social Media Failure, Now Jeopardizing Google Itself.

We hoped, we prayed, we begged, but despite our desire for something to compete with Goliath Facebook, the writing is on the wall. You may recall that weeks before Google Plus was even announced I wrote about this situation. I stated that the future of social media is NOT more networks, but rather tools that make the current graph more effective via relationship management. Low and behold, here came Google Plus. Privately (with my personal contacts) along with some public Facebook arguments I was berated for my prediction of the failure of Google’s third inroad into the game. I came out of the closet a few weeks ago and openly made my prediction known via my post Three Reasons Google Plus is Facing Difficulties.

Boy, did I take a lot of heat for my view on this. Here’s the big problem for our friend Google… Their core business of throwing ads is in major jeopardy. 1) Fire the CEO and lead management that pushed the Google Plus idea internally. 2) Spin off Android into its own company. Q&A: Hillary Clinton on Libya, China, the Middle East and Barack Obama. TIME Managing Editor Richard Stengel accompanied Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on her recent trip to Libya, Oman, Afghanistan and Pakistan. On Oct. 19, in the course of reporting for TIME’s cover story, which is now available online to subscribers, he conducted a wide-ranging interview with her, discussing among other things, the Middle East, China and American exceptionalism. A transcript of most of that conversation follows. Well, thank you so much for this. Let’s start with the trip. Yes. So I thought your remarks in Libya were very upbeat, very optimistic.

Well, let me just take a step back and put Libya into a context that I think answers the question. MPs vote in favour of using Twitter in Commons.

13 October 2011Last updated at 21:03 The debate in full from BBC Democracy Live MPs have backed a motion allowing them to use Twitter during Commons debates. An amendment that would have effectively banned its use - by permitting MPs to only "receive and send urgent messages" in the chamber - was defeated by 206 votes to 63. Some MPs had argued that the widespread use of smart phones and tablet computers during proceedings would bring the Commons into "disrepute". But others said Twitter was a valuable way to communicate with the public. Until now there has been an informal arrangement allowing MPs to use handheld electronic devices in the Commons but not laptops. But in January a deputy Commons Speaker told MPs they were not allowed to use Twitter inside the chamber. 'Outside influence' It also recommended they be allowed to refer to such devices, instead of paper notes, when making speeches, and be free to use laptops in committee meetings, including select committees.

The FTC ruled that "the options for declining or leaving the social network were ineffective". "Google Buzz fell short of our usual standards," Google said in a blog post. "While we worked quickly to make improvements, regulators unsurprisingly wanted more detail about what went wrong and how we could prevent it from happening again. "Today, we've reached an agreement with the FTC to address their concerns.

Social media is something that has become so prevalent in our culture that I have seen everything from large companies to churches having their own Facebook accounts. When I first was presented with the idea that using Twitter, Facebook, or blogging as something in education I was wary of its application.

As I have immersed myself in the process, and have seen my own staff and school use this themselves along with students, I have seen some tremendous changes in their practice. I really believe that using technology just to do the same things that we have always done, but on the computer, is not a good enough reason. There has to be more. Thinking about this today, I have really seen some of the impacts that social media is having on education. 1. I have said this many times before, that education is based upon relationships. Social Media Policies in Education. Social Media Corporate Guidelines. Corporate social responsibility. The term "corporate social responsibility" became popular in the 1960s and has remained a term used indiscriminately by many to cover legal and moral responsibility more narrowly construed.

Proponents argue that corporations increase long term profits by operating with a CSR perspective, while critics argue that CSR distracts from business' economic role. A 2000 study compared existing econometric studies of the relationship between social and financial performance, concluding that the contradictory results of previous studies reporting positive, negative, and neutral financial impact, were due to flawed empirical analysis and claimed when the study is properly specified, CSR has a neutral impact on financial outcomes.[5] Critics[6][7] questioned the "lofty" and sometimes "unrealistic expectations" in CSR.[8] or that CSR is merely window-dressing, or an attempt to pre-empt the role of governments as a watchdog over powerful multinational corporations.

Full bio… I am not a fan of extensive or granular employment policies. I believe they end up being more noose than protection—for both employers and employees. But lawyers and HR managers are very concerned with risk management, treating people fairly and consistently, and letting people know what to expect. The real issue is whether and how much you want to control what gets said about your company. 1. 2. 3. Should you be fired for what you say on Facebook? The short answer to the question is no. Unfortunately however, that's not how everyone sees it. In the first case of its kind, an employee was fired as a result of comments they left on Facebook. The comments were aimed at her boss, and the woman at the centre of the case also exchanged comments with other workers, around her original statement. The supervisor found out, and the employee was fired as a result. Is it the same as talking down the pub? In your own time, you should be able to say pretty much what you want to your own friends without any risk of being fired.

The fact is as well that you can't, or shouldn't be fired for having an opinion.
