Portal:Systems science. Edit The Systems science Portal Systems are sets of entities, physical or abstract, comprising a whole where each component interacts with or is related to at least one other component and they all serve a common objective.

Portal:Systems science

The scientific research field which is engaged in the interdisciplinary study of universal system-based properties of the world is general system theory, systems science and recently systemics. Edit The Science Portal Science is formed from methodical study of nature stemming from testable explanations and predictions.

Portal:Science

An older and closely related current meaning emerged from Aristotle, whereby "science" referred to the body of reliable knowledge that is logically and rationally explained (see "History and etymology" section below). Since classical antiquity, science as knowledge was closely linked to philosophy. In the early modern era the two words, "science" and "philosophy", were sometimes used interchangeably in the English language. Ever-evolving, "science" is, more modernly, a term referring to the pursuit of knowledge, and not the knowledge itself.

Currently, there are both hard (e.g, biological psychology) and soft science (e.g., social psychology) fields within the discipline. Clinton Richard Dawkins, is a British ethologist, evolutionary biologist and author. He is an emeritus fellow of New College, Oxford, and was the University of Oxford's Professor for Public Understanding of Science from 1995 until 2008. Dawkins came to prominence with his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, which popularised the gene-centered view of evolution and introduced the term meme. In 1982 he introduced into evolutionary biology an influential concept, presented in his book The Extended Phenotype, that the phenotypic effects of a gene are not necessarily limited to an organism's body, but can stretch far into the environment, including the bodies of other organisms.

Portal:Electromagnetism

When an electric charge is moving from the perspective of an observer, the electric field of this charge due to space contraction is no longer seen by the observer as spherically symmetric due to non-radial time dilation, and it must be computed using the Lorentz transformations. As in many sciences, the Earth can be studied both experimentally and theoretically. Also, there are both reductionist and holistic approaches to Earth Science. Although mining and precious stones have been in human interests throughout the history of civilization, their development into the sciences of economic geology and mineralogy did not occur until the 18th century. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The first mathematical formulation of gravity was published in 1687 by Sir Isaac Newton.

Portal:Gravitation

His law of universal gravitation was the standard theory of gravity until work by Albert Einstein and others on general relativity. Since calculations in general relativity are complicated, and Newtonian gravity is sufficiently accurate for most applications, when dealing with weak gravitational fields (e.g., when launching rockets, projectiles, or swinging pendulums, etc.), Newton's formulas are generally preferred. Steven Weinberg noted that we could still build a suspension bridge with Newton's laws. Newton's theory is much simpler in mathematical structure than general relativity, and is used very often. Portal:Water. Portal:Earthquakes. Portal:Fire. Fire is a form of combustion, and is one of the most spectacular chemical phenomena, that transforms a solid or a liquid substance into gaseous substances with simultaneous release of heat and light energy.

Portal:Fire

Controlling fire for the purposes of providing heat and light was one of early humankind's great achievements. This portal contains information relating to fire and firefighting. The Hamlet chicken processing plant fire was an industrial disaster that took place at the Imperial Foods chicken processing plant in Hamlet, North Carolina, USA on September 3, 1991, after a failure in a faulty modification to a hydraulic line.

Twenty-five people were killed and 54 injured in the fire as they were trapped behind locked fire doors. Due to a lack of inspectors, the plant had never received a safety inspection in 11 years of operation, and it is thought that a single inspection would have easily prevented the incident.
