BookServer: A Plan to Build an Open Web of Books

The system, built on an open architecture and using open book formats, promises that the books housed there will work on any device whether that's a laptop, PC, smartphone, game console, or one of the myriad of e-Readers like Amazon's Kindle. The project's lofty goal is to essentially create an open web of books where anyone can publish their books and make their content available via search. Any Book, Open Formats Although still in the early days of development and potentially taking years to complete, the BookServer project will allow search engines to index books from all over the web. An Open Marketplace for eBooks Today, a few booksellers have partnered with the BookServer system including Feedbooks, O'Reilly, Adobe, and the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) project.

Here is COPS : Calibre OPDS (and HTML) PHP Server - Technology and me

In my opinion Calibre is a marvelous tool but is too big and has too much dependencies to be used only for its content server. That's the main reason why I coded this OPDS / HTML content server. I needed a simple tool to be installed on a small server (Seagate Dockstar in my case). I initially thought of Calibre2OPDS but as it generate static file no search was possible. So COPS's main advantages are : No need for many dependencies. No need for a lot of CPU or RAM.Not much code.Search is available. With Dropbox / Owncloud it's very easy to have an up to date OPDS content server.100% OPDS valid code (checked with was my first PHP experiment and so fun to code.

Disclaimer It's been reported as working on most web servers (Nginx, Apache, Cherokee, Lighttpd, IIS) and is used a lot on NAS (Synology, QNap, ReadyNas). I personally protect my COPS catalog with Basic HTTP auth and HTTPS. As I already said, I had never coded in PHP before so I'm not proud at all about the code quality. Features Demo. Kovid Goyal started developing libprs500 on 31 October 2006, when the Sony PRS-500 was introduced. The main idea was to enable the use of the PRS-500 on Linux. Goyal, with support from the MobileRead forums,[2] reverse-engineered the proprietary file format LRF. In 2008, the name was changed to calibre, generally written in lowercase even at the beginning of a sentence.[3] calibre supports many file formats and reading devices.

Open Publication Distribution System. OPDS. The Open Publication Distribution System specification is prepared by an informal grouping of partners, combining Internet Archive, O'Reilly Media, Feedbooks, OLPC, and others. History[edit] OPDS is based on the initial work done by Lexcycle,[2] the company behind Stanza, an eBook reader application for iOS. All revisions of the specification were produced by an informal group organized around an open mailing list.[3] Example of OPDS 1.1 content[edit] An example of an acquisition feed in OPDS: <? OPDS Catalogs[edit] Dozens of OPDS catalogs are available online, and in many different languages.[7] Many users of OPDS also create their own OPDS catalog, as a way to access their ebooks from any device.[8] Developers implementing an OPDS catalog usually use the Feedbooks catalog[9] as an example of a fully featured catalog.
