Why Living Cells Are The Future Of Data Processing

By definition, a computer is anything that processes data, performs calculations, or uses so-called logic gates to turn inputs (for example, 1s and 0s in binary code) into outputs. And now, a small international community of scientists is working to expand the realm of computers to include cells, animals, and other living organisms. Some of their experiments are highly theoretical; others represent the first steps toward usable biological computers. Biological Computer: Stanford Researchers Discover Genetic Transistors That Turn Cells Into Computers. Researchers at Stanford University announced this week that they've created genetic receptors that can act as a sort of "biological computer," potentially revolutionizing how diseases are treated.

Biological Computer: Stanford Researchers Discover Genetic Transistors That Turn Cells Into Computers

In a paper published in the journal "Science" on Friday, the team described their system of genetic transistors, which can be inserted into living cells and turned on and off if certain conditions are met. The researchers hope these transistors could eventually be built into microscopic living computers. Said computers would be able to accomplish tasks like telling if a certain toxin is present inside a cell, seeing how many times a cancerous cell has divided or determining precisely how an administered drug interacts with each individual cell.

Once the transistor determines the conditions are met, it could then be used to make the cell, and many other cells around it, do a specific thing--like telling cancerous cells to destroy themselves. Stephen Wolfram Wants To Make Computer Language More Human

The system is designed for faster, more intuitive coding and loaded with encyclopedic knowledge of the world; its maker promises it to be a more human form of programming by being able to interpret and use images, data scraped from websites, and other less-mathematical information. The response has been both enthusiastic and skeptical. Supporters say it could be an entirely new way of building software, while writer and software engineer David Auerbach at Slate dared to call it snake oil. Noos. His contributions have been acknowledged and lauded, repeatedly, with honorary degrees and awards that include the National Medal of Technology, the Turing Award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and membership in the National Academy of Engineering. In the early days, Cerf was a program manager for the United States Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) funding various groups to develop TCP/IP technology. IT posters to cover your empty walls. Posted in Tech blog on June 4th, 2008 by Pingdom If you’re like us and have lots of empty wall space in your office you need to check out this list.

We have collected a list of posters that focus on interesting information rather than nice-looking sunsets. And of course all are computer and network related. We will definitely be ordering or printing some of these ourselves to add to the create spirit here at the office.
