Introduction to Complex Systems
A Complex System is any system which involves a number of elements, arranged in structure(s) which can exist on many scales. These go through processes of change that are not describable by a single rule nor are reducible to only one level of explanation, these levels often include features whose emergence cannot be predicted from their current specifications. Complex Systems Theory also includes the study of the interactions of the many parts of the system. Previously, when studying a subject, researchers tended to use a reductionist approach which attempted to summarize the dynamics, processes, and change that occurred in terms of lowest common denominators and the simplest, yet most widely provable and applicable elegant explanations.ComplexSystems

Complexity and Emergence
"Emergence is increasingly "in fashion" (Resnick, 1994; Holland, 1999; Johnson, 2001; Keller, 2003), as was complexity fifteen years ago (Waldrop, 1992) and systems theory (von Bertalanffy, 1968), cybernetics (Wiener, 1948), and unified science (Reisch, 2005) among other things before that (cf. Clayton, 2006)..." From Complexity to Emergence and Beyond (2008)The Complexity and Artificial Life Research Concept for Self-Organizing Systems
Here we will introduce the integrating sciences of Complex Systems and of ALife together with related systems areas. We'll also pursue the wider social implications of these transdisciplinary theories of self-organization on mind, art, spirit and life as it could be... Research Highlight On September 2nd, 2010, Professor Armen Stepanyants was among a handful of scientists to receive a grand prize in the DIADEM challenge, an international scientific contest organized by the Allen Institute for Brain Science, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study at George Mason University. The jury awarded a grand prize to Professor Stepanyants “for the better overall biological results in the spirit of pure automation.”

Organizers: J. Doyne Farmer SFI’s focus area in Risk, Markets, and Innovation uses both empirical, analytical, and theoretical methods to explore the origins of financial risk. Using unique, real-world data sets and modeling approaches that simulate, probabilistically, the individual and aggregated behaviors of agents acting in a financial market, SFI scientists develop and test new, quantitative theoretical frameworks that describe the complex dynamics at play in markets and whole economies. These theoretical frameworks are a departure from mainstream economic theory; they do not assume the self-correcting or bounding influence of an equilibrium, nor do they assume that agents act rationally.

Growing economy of every country demands the growth in small scale and large scale businesses and how do these businesses run? You may wonder about this and say they run on money and good infrastructure. Along with these 2 things a business runs correctly only because of its efficient managers and how they manage the rest of the manpower. The equations from which complex system models are developed generally derive from statistical physics , information theory and non-linear dynamics , and represent organized but unpredictable behaviors of systems of nature that are considered fundamentally complex . The physical manifestations of such systems cannot be defined, so the usual choice is to refer to "the system" as the mathematical information model, without referring to the undefined physical subject the model represents. One of a variety of journals using this approach to complexity is Complex Systems .

Holism in science , or Holistic science , is an approach to research that emphasizes the study of complex systems . This practice is in contrast to a purely analytic tradition (sometimes called reductionism ) which aims to gain understanding of systems by dividing them into smaller composing elements and gaining understanding of the system through understanding their elemental properties. The holism-reductionism dichotomy is often evident in conflicting interpretations of experimental findings and in setting priorities for future research. Modern science has increasingly moved out of nature and into the laboratory, driven by a desire to find an underlying mechanistic basis of life. Despite all its success, this approach is one-sided and urgently calls for a counterbalancing movement toward nature.
