Prior to 2017, nearly half of the world’s unwanted paper and plastic recycling was sent to China. For a long time, exporting waste seemed an easy and cheap solution for developing countries, as ‘recycle’ was sent out of sight, and out of mind. With China receiving an average of 20,000 tonnes of discarded paper and plastic material daily however, it soon became obvious that this was neither environmentally sustainable for China, or the world.(1) In the summer of 2017, this prompted China to impost a ban on accepting 24 types of imported solid waste, including most notably the ubiquitous plastic known as PET, which is used for making everything from shampoo bottles to fruit clam-shells, to water bottles and even tennis balls.(2) For China, the bans have been a chance to start rethinking their environment and the impact it has on its people.
