He left school temporarily in 1832 and then permanently in 1837. After leaving school, he worked as a clerk, labourer, teacher, and sailor: he referred to sailing as “my Yale College and my Harvard.” As a sailor, Melville discovered the crises colonialism had caused around the world, and began to see white men as savage and ferocious, and he felt for the slaves and natives who had been so trodden upon by Europeans and Americans. He was taken prisoner by Typee natives in 1842, and found the cannibals treated each other more humanely than Christians; he found the experience eye-opening. Melville turned to writing in 1846, and though instantly popular he was disgusted by requests for embellishment from publishers.
