Tis the Season for Dumpster Diving | Disrupting Dinner Parties. Fall is almost here, my friends. Forget candy apples and halcyon hayrides: we begin the glory days of dumpster diving. It’s cool enough to keep the apples crisp, and warm enough to make the late nights welcoming. While I wouldn’t call myself a freegan, about half of the food that I eat is “rescued.” Though I have the means to buy the food I need, dumpster diving supports the life I want to live: one of generosity, community building, and obscenely good food. Poor form, good effort. The Mechanics: What to Bring - a headlamp - sturdy garden gloves - socks, pants and shoes that can take a few stains (ie. stray egg yolks, spilled milk). - a car - sturdy boxes / crates (or be prepared to borrow some) - coffee + water (as you’ll be going late at night — 11:00pm – 3:00am) - upper body strength (lifting a bag of bananas up and out of a dumpster is pretty tiring) - hand sanitizer or Doctor Bronner’s soap - another person– both at the dumpster and at the kitchen to help process - ethics and decency.
