All the colors we see fit together into a 3D structure, a cube, which has the primary colors and black and white as its corners. If you could jump inside this cube, you could literally see what colors happen in any direction, from any starting point. You could stand on purple and look toward pink, or stand on brown and see how far away orange is in one direction, and how far away blue is in the other.
If you want to see muted, gray colors, look towards the center of the cube. ColorCube Palette is a simple representation of this infinity of color relationships. I call my ColorCube a Palette because ideally, I would like it to function as one. In the meantime, you can use ColorCube Palette as such with the help of a utility called WhatColor which fits in a corner of the screen and gives the color numbers of whatever pixel is currently under your mouse.
