Some games even allow us to play God in less subtle ways. These deity simulators are all well and good, but what if you want a more personal holy adventure? Well then, you need to check out the Soul Blazer trilogy.
Developed in the early 90s by a small Japanese company called Quintet, the series comprises three Super Nintendo games: Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma. We don't need to tell you that the gaming industry is currently experiencing an 'indie boom' -- the evidence has been piling up throughout 2011, with numerous developers at AAA studios leaving their jobs behind to work on exactly the kind of games they want to make. You only have to look at the Independent Games Festival record number of entries to know indies mean business this year. This time around, nearly 570 games were entered into the competition, marking an increase of more than 45 percent compared to the previous year.
We say this every year, but we genuinely mean it -- having to choose just ten titles from the incredible batch of indie titles this year was not only next-to-impossible, but also excruciatingly heart-breaking, as we had to knock favorite after favorite off until there were only ten remaining. And by subtle I mean lazy. Tinte inhabits a place called ‘Inkwold’, which is supposed to be vibrant and colourful. For some reason, the colour has abruptly been drained from the world, leaving only a few vials of pigment (give or take). Tinte jumps around, collects these vials of pigment, which mix to form a colour that must be collected per level. The majority of the scenery is greyscale, and gameplay elements focus quite a bit on colour. Truth be told, I feel kind of bad for not giving a prize. Is a very pretty game, with excellent graphics and a distinctive, coherent visual style – and the music is lovely too.
