I flew back from Yonaguni via Ishigaki once again, and was picked up at the airport in Naha by Miho, Doug's diving shop business partner. We went past the dive shop to say a quick hello to Jim, the business photographer, and then Miho dropped me off at Doug's apartment, the spare bedroom of which Doug had kindly offered for my visit. I got myself organised, and wrote up my hammerheads blog and went for a wander around, and to see if I could find an internet connection. Doug lives pretty close to the ocean in an area to the north of Naha called Sunabe. He is also close to one of the US airforce bases here, and I was amazed by the amount of aircraft flying in to land and taking off from the base.
Minke whales are commonly seen along the Ribbon Reefs north of Cairns between May and August. As well as diving the world famous Cod Hole the second day devoted almost entirely to finding and snorkeling and/or diving with minke whales.
In the water with Dwarf Minke Whales: A unique up-close experience for divers and snorkelers. An up-close experience found nowhere else: In-water encounters between humans and whales are rare and leave lasting impressions on the snorkelers and divers fortunate enough to be close to these large marine mammals. Encounters between dive boats and Dwarf Minke Whales on the reefs north of Cairns offer one of the most unique experiences you can have with a marine mammal. In-water encoutners with Dwarf Minke whales can last for hours, with the whales approaching quite closely, truly a remarkable experience. About Minke Whales Dwarf Minke Whales were only recently noticed and described as a unique species of whale in the 1980’s. These whales are very similar to minke whales; with their smaller size, distinct color pattern, and exclusive distribution in Southern oceans distinguishing them from their larger cousins.
