RDF, SPARQL and the semantic web are too scarey for mortals, right?

Last week the Cabinet Office issued a call for Open Data Developer s to sign-up to get a preview of the forthcoming UK Government public data website. The site includes a directory of existing datasets plus a growing number of datasets that have been converted to RDF and which will shortly be available as Linked Data. This data is being stored in the Talis Platform providing developers with access to SPARQL endpoints as a means to query the data; we’ll also be including search and other access mechanisms at a later date.Earlier this year Gordon Brown appointed Tim Berners-Lee as an advisor to the Cabinet Office to help the government begin the process of opening up its data. This was one part of the initiation of a project to begin opening up UK government data in a similar style to the US. A key part of Berners-Lee’s vision for putting government data online has been Linked Data which promises to provide a much richer way for citizens to begin accessing, browsing, and using government data. Several other governments have begun opening up data assets including Australia and New Zealand .

Government data is being put online to increase accountability, contribute valuable information about the world, and to enable government, the country, and the world to function more efficiently. All of these purposes are served by putting the information on the Web as Linked Data. Start with the "low-hanging fruit". Whatever else, the raw data should be made available as soon as possible. Preferably, it should be put up as Linked Data.
Putting Government Data online
Abstract Every day, governments and government agencies publish more data on the Internet. Sharing this data enables greater transparency; delivers more efficient public services; and encourages greater public and commercial use and re-use of government information. Some governments have even created catalogs or portals (such as data.gov ) to make it easy for the public to find and use this data. Although the reasons may vary, the logistics and practicalities of opening government data are the same.
