A StreamGraph is shown for the latest 1000 tweets which contain the search word. The default search query is 'data visualization' but a new one can be typed into the text box at the top of the application. You can also enter a Twitter ID preceded by the '@' symbol to see the latest tweets from that user. A parameter to the URL can be used to specify the initial search word. The project was implemented in Processing , which shouldn't come as much of a surprise to anyone, and we've seen this type of 3-D globe thing before . What's cool here is that all the data came from the Flickr API :

It’s something quite different to see the bombings and the shootings mount, and watch the insurgency metastasize. NYU political science grad student (and occasional Danger Room contributor) Drew Conway has done just that, using an open source statistical programming language called R and a graphical plotting software tool .

In 1956, North America was connected to Europe by an undersea cable called TAT-1 . It was the world's first submarine telephone system, although telegraph cables had crossed for the ocean for a century. Trans-Atlantic cable capacity soared over the next 50 years, reaching nearly 10 Tbps in 2008. In recent years, the annual growth of trans-Atlantic capacity has slowed, while the growth rates on the intra-Asian and Europe-Asia routes have increased rapidly.

The Google Earth blog recently posted some examples of how well Google Earth can be used as a scientific visualization platform.

Cada color representa una bola numerada, del 1 al 49. Las líneas van trazando la frecuencia de aparición de cada número de un año al siguiente, indicado cuando cruzan con los ejes. El centro se corresponde con una frecuencia del 4% y el anillo exterior del 20% (con saltos cada 1%). Todos los números tienden a agruparse en torno a un círculo que estaría exactamente en el valor 12,24% (6/49).
