http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/interview_with_tim_berners-lee_part_1.php During my recent trip to Boston, I had the opportunity to visit MIT. At the end of a long day of meetings with various MIT tech masterminds, I made my way to the funny shaped building (see photo right-below) where the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and its director Tim Berners-Lee work. Berners-Lee is of course the man who invented the World Wide Web 20 years ago.
http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/the_state_of_linked_data_in_2010.php In May last year we wrote about the state of Linked Data , an official W3C project that aims to connect separate data sets on the Web. Linked Data is a subset of the wider Semantic Web movement, in which data on the Web is encoded with meaning using technologies such as RDF and OWL. The ultimate vision is that the Web will become much more structured, which opens up many possibilities for "smarter" Web applications. At this stage last year, we noted that Linked Data was ramping up fast - evidenced by the increasing number of data sets on the Web as at March 2009.

The Linking Open Data cloud diagram

This web page is the home of the LOD cloud diagram . This image shows datasets that have been published in Linked Data format, by contributors to the Linking Open Data community project and other individuals and organisations. It is based on metadata collected and curated by contributors to the CKAN directory . Clicking the image will take you to an image map, where each dataset is a hyperlink to its homepage. The diagram is maintained by Richard Cyganiak ( DERI, NUI Galway ) and Anja Jentzsch ( Freie Universität Berlin ). Government Data

evidences of users' competence in the Linked Data Cloud By now many datasets have been published in the Linking Open Data community project. Interlinked among each other, those datasets form an enormous and growing Web of Data that hosts much valuable information. Linked Data Cloud , maintained by Richard Cyganiak and Anja Jentzsch provides a visual overview of datasets in the cloud and their connections. The purpose of mapping the evidences of competence on the Linked Data Web is to extract a subset of Linked Data Sets that is relevant for determining a user's interests and competence in a particular domain; and eventually his/her capability to solve particular problems.
