A Friendlier Outlook on Drones. By: Jonathan Farache In its grand scope, the sky has always been a generally under-tapped resource. Whether it’s a bird, a plane, or Superman flying up there, that something has occupied that vast space has always intrigued us. One benefit of the sky’s many features is the great vantage point it offers, and capitalizing on this has been one of humanity’s most successful achievements throughout history.
Photogrammetry is, not surprisingly, the science behind gathering qualitative and quantitative information from photographs and has been a traditional tool for mapping using aerial photos. Recent photogrammetric development, combined with robotics and high-end drones, has unearthed a nice fusion between man’s penchants for the skies, and taking incredibly high-quality photos and videos. On 2 October 2012, the creation of ASSORPAS (Associazione Italiana per I Light RPAS), the new Italian national association for Light RPAS (MTOM <150 kg), was formally announced. The founding members of ASSORPAS comprise 15 Italian companies, consisting of 6 system integrators/manufacturers, 6 RPAS operators, 3 sub-system/sensor manufacturers, namely: Advanced Aviation Technology, Aermatica, Aeroriprese, Aibotix Italia, Aslatech, Cons.Ticonzero, Filmer, Flighttech Italia, Iptsat, Neutech, NTA Italdron, Pitom, Vireal, Volovisione, Conte Gianpaolo. The current board of directors consists of: Paolo Marras, Aermatica (president), Stefano Russo, NTA Italdron (vice president), Antonio D’Argenio, Ticonzero (councillor), Massimo Matteoli, Aibotix Italia (councillor), Martino Montagna, Vireal (councillor).
