Early 1900s in Colour - All around the world. Dirty UNIX Joke - NYT Facebook Rivals. This morning’s New York Times features a story on a group of NYU undergraduates working on a would-be Facebook killer called Diaspora*, the software for which “will let users set up their own personal servers, called seeds, create their own hubs and fully control the information they share.” The article is a neat read both for the specifics of the proposal and the anti-Facebook sentiment it highlights amongst young’uns in the tech community; it also marks what may be the first time a dirty UNIX joke has managed to sneak into the hallowed pages of the Times. A tipster draws our attention to the writing on the left side of the chalkboard behind the students: “TOUCH GREP UNZIP MOUNT FSCK FSCK FSCK UMOUNT.” Wait a second: That’s not intelligible code! It’s almost as if it has another meaning. Pretty much every command on the blackboard is missing the argument(s) that makes it useful (e.g. filenames for ‘unzip’ and ‘touch’).

Mars' Moon Phobos has been analyzed as being one-third hollow according to European Space Agency reports, which has triggered some wild and utterly fascinating rumors and speculation that we've featured below. From "The Phobos Blog" -- published on March 25th: General , Science 25 March, 2010 17:21 Radio science result from 2008 Phobos Flyby now accepted for publication: We report independent results from two subgroups of the Mars Express Radio Science (MaRS) team who independently analyzed Mars Express (MEX) radio tracking data for the purpose of determining consistently the gravitational attraction of the moon Phobos on the MEX spacecraft, and hence the mass of Phobos.

We conclude that the interior of Phobos likely contains large voids. When applied to various hypotheses bearing on the origin of Phobos, these results are inconsistent with the proposition that Phobos is a captured asteroid.

In 2010 we are seeing the continued mainstreaming of everyday goods and services onto the internet. As everything becomes virtual, the internet becomes the first port of call when a person needs a new good or requires a new service. More and more people, from all walks of life, are becoming familiar with the internet. Particularly in the last year, as smart-phones introduce the concept of web-services to people who would not normally have exposure to an internet connected computer. This changes typical user expectations and influences how clients want to market on the web. Websites need to be even clearer, better structured and more eye-catching.

We are seeing JavaScript pushing out its boundaries, new design philosophies like grid systems becoming commonplace, bigger bolder headings and banners and more and more iconification of websites. JavaScript – Light boxes, carousel, tabs and more! Design style can be practical. Presenting many options to a user can make a design cluttered.

Here’s a wonderful reimagining of the News Diamond from the first part of my Model for a 21st Century Newsroom. Gaurav Mishra’s diagram (shown above) takes my rhombus (shown below) and plots it against two axes. It’s rather lovely. Helpfully, however, Mishra takes the concept forward a little. As he explains: “my “news lifecycle” is different from Paul Bradshaw’s “news diamond” in two ways - “1. It’s fair to say that my diamond does take the perspective of a news organisation – that’s who it was aimed at. Anyway, Mishra poses some questions: How do we increase the number and variety of sources in the process of creating, curating and consuming news?

I’d be very interested in any responses. In the meantime, here’s those original diagrams for your conceptual enjoyment… As it happens, the diamond was just another way of showing the following flow diagram from the same post, so now I have 3 diagrams to refer to… Like this: Like Loading... Vintage Ad Browser. The Myth of Music Ownership. Now, on the surface, that's a fairly provocative statement, seemingly designed to inflame music industry lawyers, and encourage outraged comments from audiophile readers. But it is actually intended to demonstrate/debunk an illogical yet widely-held belief, illustrate a precipitating technology trend, and put the idea of "my music" into historical perspective. The ability to record and playback music is really quite a recent occurence, when you consider the span of human existence on planet Earth. Up until 1888, the only way to hear music was to experience the vibrating air molecules produced by musicians, up close and personal, live and in real time.

People have been making music for hundreds of thousands (maybe millions) of years! Producing music has always been a thing that *everybody* does, young and old, male and female, professional and layman, commoner and king. Until Edison, music was not something you could own, only something you could make. Until Edison ... Why? The Myth - pdx. R.I.P. Chatroulette, 2009-2010 - Internet Culture. It always seems the stars that burn the brightest are the ones to flame out the fastest.

So it was as unsurprising as it was sad when the news broke early Tuesday that Chatroulette’s cultural relevance had expired overnight. Cause of death: penises. The world was a different place when the site launched in November of 2009. A simpler one. Those were heady days that followed. But the warning signs were all there, grim indications that such great heights were unsustainable. The world is full of big fans of the penis — God knows I’m one of the most devoted.

In the interest of journalistic integrity, I went on Chatroulette this morning to verify its obsolescence. On se fait un twunch ? Inspire me, now! Vitry, France. 2011 & Hackney, London. 2011 by Gaia. Just Detention International.

5 Reasons Pigs Are More Awesome Than You. Thoughts on Creativity and Design Process | Abduzeedo | Graphic. I will start this post off by saying that everybody is creative and for some that might come as a surprise, but I believe in the idea of creativity as a means of solving problems; the easiest and most efficient way possible. When I say easy I'm referring to the timeframe that it takes to complete the task, and efficient to how well received the work is from the target audience. But the question is what to do when we cannot come up with any good idea or the so terrified creative block. The creative process is something unique because it’s personal, we cannot teach someone how to come up with ideas but we can learn how to organize our thoughts in order to make our ideas easier to achieve in the form of a good design.

At least in my opinion and let me explain why. Overflow of Inspiration We are bombarded with information all day long and even when we are sleeping we might dream and have ideas and therefore inspiration. It's an early, awesome moment in Redmoon Theatre's "Moby-Dick," a co-production with Pegasus Players. The full-blooded fantasy pictorially explores Herman Melville's epic of the elementally self-destructive pursuit of a white whale by a crazed captain. Adapted in 1990 by Redmoon artistic director Blair Thomas and Chicago playwright Jeff Dorchen, and powerfully accompanied by Michael Zerang's relentless score, "Moby-Dick" (the title oddly hyphenated) both expands an already larger-than-life saga and subtly contracts it. © Chicago Tribune.

Feeding Greed - a major pastime. So this is Christmas! I haven't been on for a while and now, in the late evening of Christmas day, I have a strange feeling of forebodance which urges me to write. A feeling born, I'm certain, out of nothing in particular but more from something general and omni-present. 2009 has been a very tough year for many of us and the troubles are not over yet.

Our world is in a seriously sick state despite the wonderful things being achieved by some world leaders for care in this time of ill health. Unfortunately, greed is not only ever-present but growing stronger every day as per its nature and, here in the west at any rate, we are fueling its needs like never before! I'm not going to bang on about the commercialism of Christmas and how its real meaning has been forgotten because that's a very prickly thorn and grasping it without adequate protection could be very painful indeed.

Greed lives, greed grows, greed conquers all, greed rules! More, more, waste, waste, buy, buy, bye, bye. 10 Things I Think I Think About 2010. We all do this. With the year coming to a close we all think forward and prognosticate about what the future will hold. To call 2009 an amazing year for our industry would be an enormous understatement. 25 Days In Federal Prison For Littering? Border Patrol Cracking. December 13, 2009 | Like this article? Join our email list: Stay up to date with the latest headlines via email. On Friday December 4th, an Arizona District Court judge told Walt Staton, a 28 year-old seminary student, that he might be facing 25 days in a federal prison. His crime was "knowingly littering" along the U.S. One day last December, Staton and a friend named Victor Ceballos, loaded 70 plastic water jugs into the back of a truck and drove from Tucson to outer stretches of Sonora desert. Staton and Ceballos are volunteers for a group called No More Deaths, which offers humanitarian aid to those trying to cross the Mexico-Arizona border. When it comes to the water bottles, volunteers are precise; they monitor each drop-off point to see if they've left too many or too few and they pick up any debris. "We hear stories from people about how they were literally crawling on the ground and thought they were going to die and came across gallon jugs of water and were able to live.
