Why isnt anyone talking about mycorrhizae? - The Community Board - GOOD

Mycorrhizae are fungi that form an extremely beneficial symbiotic relationship with almost all plants in our organic gardens. I stumbled upon it while doing research for our garden here at my college. The more I dug through academic journals, the more I found about how much research has been done, and how beneficial this fungus is. I read about it so much that I was shocked when others had never even heard about it (the standard response was "Mike O'who?"). http://www.good.is/posts/why-isn-t-anyone-talking-about-mycorrhizae

In the late 1980s, NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America studied houseplants as a way to purify the air in space facilities. They found several plants that filter out common volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Lucky for us the plants can also help clean indoor air on Earth, which is typically far more polluted than outdoor air. Other studies have since been published in the Journal of American Society of Horticultural Science further proving the science . Here's our handy of list of the best air-filtering plants. (Plus, at the bottom of this story, you'll find links about plants that are good for the air and also safe for your pets.) http://www.mnn.com/health/healthy-spaces/stories/15-houseplants-to-improve-indoor-air-quality

Planting a garden doesn’t have to be a huge undertaking. But the fear of failure keeps many a gardener-wannabe from spending time and energy on planting backyard crops. Knowing the easy vegetables to grow for your region — in addition to when and where to plant them — is the best way to ensure success. When planning your crops, try to space out the planting of foods that have a short harvest season. An ideal garden will always have something to put on the table, rather than an abundant period and then a dry spell with nothing growing. http://www.mnn.com/your-home/organic-farming-gardening/stories/easy-vegetables-to-grow

5 Secrets to a ‘No-work' Garden | Eartheasy Blog - StumbleUpon

http://eartheasy.com/blog/2011/04/5-secrets-to-a-%e2%80%98no-work%e2%80%99-garden/ It took over 20 years of gardening to realize that I didn’t have to work so hard to achieve a fruitful harvest. As the limitless energy of my youth gradually gave way to the physical realities of mid-life, the slow accretion of experience eventually led to an awareness that less work can result in greater crop yields . Inspired in part by Masanobu Fukuoka’s book, One Straw Revolution , my family experimented with gardening methods which could increase yields with less effort. Fukuoka spent over three decades perfecting his so-called “do-nothing” technique: commonsense, sustainable practices that all but eliminate the use of pesticides, fertilizer, tillage, and perhaps most significantly, wasteful effort. Here are the strategies we used which enabled us to greatly increase our garden yield, while requiring less time and less work.

Aerogel: See-Through, Strong as Steel & Ligher than Air | Designs &Ideas on Dornob - StumbleUpon

Despite its incredibly low density, aerogel is one of the most powerful materials on the planet. It can support thousands of times its own weight, block out intense heat, cold and sound – yet it is 1,000 times less dense than glass, nearly as transparent and is composed of %99.8 air. The lowest-density silica-based aerogels are even lighter than air. Despite its fragility in certain regards and its incredible lack of density, aerogel has amazing thermal, acoustical and electrical insulation properties as illustrated by the images here.
