Using simple techniques, Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden extracted data off of an iOS version 4 device and wrote an open source software utility to effectively graph this data onto a map. As a fellow researcher, I champion their creativity and their development. As an expert in this field, I have three points of argument to raise. And to suggest otherwise is completely misrepresenting Apple. Apple is gathering this data, but it’s clearly intentional, as the database is being restored across backups, and even device migrations. Apple is not harvesting this data from your device. (a) No person or entity in this state shall use an electronic tracking device to determine the location or movement of a person.

No. iPhone keeps record of everywhere you go. Security researchers have discovered that Apple's iPhone keeps track of where you go – and saves every detail of it to a secret file on the device which is then copied to the owner's computer when the two are synchronised.
The file contains the latitude and longitude of the phone's recorded coordinates along with a timestamp, meaning that anyone who stole the phone or the computer could discover details about the owner's movements using a simple program. For some phones, there could be almost a year's worth of data stored, as the recording of data seems to have started with Apple's iOS 4 update to the phone's operating system, released in June 2010. "Apple has made it possible for almost anybody – a jealous spouse, a private detective – with access to your phone or computer to get detailed information about where you've been," said Pete Warden, one of the researchers. Simon Davies, director of the pressure group Privacy International, said: "This is a worrying discovery. Il semblerait que depuis iOS 4, les iPhone logguent secrètement (et vicieusement) les latitudes et longitudes ainsi que les dates et heures associées dans un fichier caché qui est synchronisé avec l’ordinateur à chaque synchro iTunes. Bon à la limite, si ce n’était que les coordonnées GPS, ça irait à peu près, mais grâce à iPhone Tracker, le tout devient complètement lisible, même par une femme: Les chercheurs laissent entendre que ce sont au moins 12 mois de déplacements qui sont loggués (en même temps iOS 4 est sorti en juin dernier donc…) Les chercheurs ont cherché (normal) un traitement similaire dans d’autres smartphones (sous Android notamment) mais il semble que l’iPhone soit le seul qui fonctionne de cette façon.
