Everything You Do is Unethical, So Get Off Your High Horse Already. Photo via Flickr user Francis Storr In the modern world, it’s impossible to live ethically without going off the grid or killing yourself.

Everything You Do is Unethical, So Get Off Your High Horse Already

If you did live off the grid (or didn’t live, period), you wouldn’t be reading this right now. But you are. Which means you—yes, you, in spite of your Prius with the "Coexist” sticker and your love of same-sex marriage and free-range poultry—live unethically. Indeed, every single thing you do is unethical. It’s a nice gesture for you to drive the Prius with the “Coexist” sticker. No matter what you do and how you do it, you’re tangentially supporting Koch Industries. To know Koch Industries is to hate it. Koch-provided or not, well intended or not, the staples of your life—food, clothing, shelter, transportation, hygiene supplies, technologies, and other necessities—are all inherently immoral.

The Great Zoo Controversy: A Practice in Vegan Parenting

There are dietary vegans and there are ethical vegans. Dietary vegans do not consume animal products or by-products as a part of their diet, but may not necessarily draw the line on wearing leather or using animal ingredients in household products, etc. Ethical vegans not only abstain from consuming animal products or by-products in their diets, but also in clothing, household products, etc. However, even within these categories, there are differences in opinion on some matters, such as the use of animals for entertainment. Most vegans will agree that circuses with their caged or chained up animals who are poked and prodded (and otherwise mistreated) in order to train them to jump through hoops and do other tricks for our amusement is most certainly not vegan. There Is Nothing Pretentious About Being a Vegan.

Shirt via Skreened A couple of days ago, I received a very angry email from someone in reference to an article I wrote about a restaurant.

There Is Nothing Pretentious About Being a Vegan

In the article, I mentioned that I wasn't a huge fan of eating in pretentious restaurants. I also mentioned that I am a vegan. This did not sit well with the young man who emailed me.

Glass Potato Chips. Let's be honest: Potato chips are boring.

Glass Potato Chips

Every time I wander the chip aisle of the grocery store, there is some supposedly new twist on the potato chip. Classic. Jalapeno. Terra Blue. Vinegar and salt. Why couldn't the potato chip be beautiful? Behold: The Edible Glass Potato Chip This chip is stunning. This is molecular gastronomy brought home. The original recipe was created Hamid Salimian, the chef at Diva at the Met. Enjoy! XVII: Why You Should Go Vegan: A Masterpost. Serious Eats. Deep Dish Vegan Pizza. I know I’m not the first one to say it, but it’s still coming from the heart, Happy Earth Day!

Deep Dish Vegan Pizza

So many ideas came to mind of recipes to share on a special day like this, but I decided on a Deep Dish Vegan Pepperoni Pizza. Why? Because pizza was the quintessential symbol of comfort food for me in my pre-vegan days and I really liked deep dish pizza! Even though I thought honoring the earth through a vegan diet would mean pasty skin, crunchy granola and adopting foraging behaviors, I still took the leap. I’ve since learned that a vegan diet can be friendly to the planet…and not too bad on the taste buds too. Raising Backyard Chickens for Eggs. Vegans are accustomed to being asked certain questions: How can you live without cheese?

Raising Backyard Chickens for Eggs

(Easily and with clean arteries); Where do you get your protein? (Ask a gorilla); What if you and a pig were stranded on a desert island? (….what?). But we also get asked just as frequently (though somewhat less facetiously) about backyard chickens being kept specifically for eggs. Initially, raising backyard chickens may seem to address a number of problems from the perspective of avoiding industrialized farming, buying local, and animal welfare. It’s easy to conceptualize the relationship as one of respectful symbiosis in which the backyard farmer provides food and shelter to her flock in exchange for the “gift” of hens’ eggs. Unless the individual in question actually rescues their chickens from exploitative situations, the vast majority of backyard chickens originate from the same breeding industry that provides chicks to large-scale farming operations. Backyard chickens – a bad idea. Written by Glenn on March 4th, 2009 Vancouver city council is considering allowing Vancouver residents to keep chickens.

Backyard chickens – a bad idea

While I realize that some people will keep chickens and care for them properly, I fear that most will not. Here are my reasons for opposing this motion: There are already welfare concerns with the keeping of the animals who are currently allowed, such as dogs, cats, and rabbits.
