12 Great 2013 Movies to Stream Over the Holidays. Best Television Shows - Unknown Dramas and Comedies. 10 Things We Learned About the ‘Cosmos’ Reboot From Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s Reddit AMA. Marina Abramovic to Build a Temple for Abramovicism. Marina Abramovic is seeking funds for her new cult, The Marina Abramovic Institute. We’re not kidding. She’s seeking $600,000 on Kickstarter to finance whatever this thing is, and we’re afraid. According to a video on the Kickstarter, when you enter the institute, your cell phone will be taken away, you’ll be given a small, wooden table on which to sleep, and, for part of the day, the public will observe you in a glass enclosure.

That’s what you’d be paying to build. And the Kickstarter page tells that a $1000 donation will let you stare at Abramo-Jesus through your webcam (which, granted, some people think is perfectly reasonable). The promo tells us that the institute will “premiere long durational works of performance art, dance, theater, film, music, opera, and more.” Basically, she’s training her art audiences to properly receive the glory of her work. NOWNESS Film Series - Jw Anderson, Solange, Tracey Emin. The 10 Best and the 5 Worst Films From the First Half of 2013. By Dustin Rowles | Seriously Random Lists | July 1, 2013 | Comments (73 View The 10 Best 1. Mud — Derided as a one-note actor earlier in his career (or, worse yet, accused of simply playing himself in every role), McConaughey has come into his own, particularly with the recent trio of The Lincoln Lawyer, Magic Mike and Killer Joe. This performance is where he throws his shirt into the ring (dude just can’t help taking his shirt off) and announces himself, without question or derision, as a true and proper actor.

This is easily the best performance he has ever given. There are almost none of the typical McConaugheyian affectations we’ve come to expect. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. By the Way: In Conversation with Jeff Garlin (Earwolf) In only eight episodes, By the Way: In Conversation with Jeff Garlin has become my favorite podcast. These hour-plus interviews, conducted live in front of an audience at Largo in LA, are genuinely wonderful, sharp and funny with the feel of an actual conversation between two smart people. Little Known Facts by Christine Sneed In his slender little essay on what he calls the capital city of the world, E.

This week, I’ve been reading Matt Bell’s In the House Upon the Dirt Between the Lake and the Woods, a terrifying and wonderful fable that has nestled itself somewhere deep inside my shoulder blades. 10 Classic Movies from the Modern Era That Never Got Old. By Rob Payne | Seriously Random Lists | April 25, 2013 | Comments (131 View Around here, we tend to like movies. Or haven't you noticed? When people love an art form enough to turn it into a hobby or a job, there's a pretty good chance those people like to make that art apart of their lives as much as possible. Watching the same movies over and over, our favorites, is no different than watching a favorite sporting team compete every Sunday. Sure, the latter may have different outcomes every week, but we're ultimately rooting for the same things -- victory for our protagonists. Some times those victories are thrilling and nail-biting, other times they're assured, and even other times they're just too dull to instill much passion, anymore.

No sports team is ever perfect, no matter what Miami Dolphins fans tell you, and I hesitate to say that any movie is ever perfect, but some movies come mighty damn close. L.A. Zodiac Boogie Nights Jackie Brown Out of Sight True Grit The Prestige Gladiator. The 10 Best New Songs We Heard This Week: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Phoenix. 10 New Must-Reads For April. Dear reader, we made it. Spring has taken its sweet time, but at long last we’re looking forward to weeks and weeks of nice weather — all the better for outdoors reading and breaks in sunny nooks, of course.

This month, we’re diving into works by new writers, established masters, and everyone in between. But will we be able to breathe again after reading the new David Sedaris collection? Apparently, we’ll find out. After the jump, check out the ten books we’re most excited about reading this month, and let us know what you can’t wait to add to your pile in the comments. Odds Against Tomorrow, Nathaniel Rich (April 2) In Rich’s sophomore novel, a man who predicts disasters for a living finds himself in a doozy he didn’t expect — a flood that washes out New York City. The 10 Albums You Need to Hear in April. Another month, another packed release schedule — and, as ever, we’ve picked out the ten best albums in the month ahead, along with a roundup of everything else that’s worth hearing or worth running like the wind from. On the whole, April is shaping up as a pretty excellent month for album releases — among other things, there’s the return of The Flaming Lips and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, beautiful new music from The Besnard Lakes and Iron & Wine, weird dance-floor-friendly horrorcore from Xander Harris, the continuing renaissance of James Williamson-era Iggy and the Stooges, and at least one album of the year contender.

(Spoiler: The Knife.) Xander Harris — The New Dark Age of Love (April 2) As we’ve noted several times here, Austin-based producer Xander Harris made one of the most underrated records of 2011 with his faux-horror soundtrack Urban Gothic. The Greatest Fantasy Films You Haven’t Seen. Essential Mix – “Atoms For Peace” (2013-03-09) by MaxMuzik. Atoms for Peace - BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix. 10 MP3s You Need to Download for Free This Week: Wire, Kristin Hersh. The 10 Sexiest Books of All Time. Today would have been the 110th birthday of one of history’s sexiest women, Anaïs Nin. To honor her confessional and often erotic literary legacy, we suggest you spend the day reading something unabashedly sexy — but no, not Fifty Shades of Meek Girl Blushing.

It wouldn’t be a tribute to Ms. Nin if it didn’t have any literary merit. After the jump, cuddle up to our picks for the ten sexiest literary works of all time — but as in all things romantic, it’s to each their own, so if these leave you cold, suggest your own favorite titillating reads in the comments. Delta of Venus, Anaïs Nin One of the first women to prominently publish erotica, Nin is still a giant of the genre.

10 MP3s You Need to Download for Free This Week: The-Dream, Ghostface Killah. It’s Friday, which means that it’s only a few hours until we get to sleep for two days straight, and also that it’s time for our regular roundup of new music to get your hands on this week. This week the return of The-Dream, the return of Ghostface Killah, the return of They Might Be Giants, the return of Thalia Zedek and the non-return of a bunch of other great artists, including a great El Perro del Mar remix, the next step in the evolution of our erstwhile social media department, a heap of free Kode9 stuff, and more.

None of this will cost you a dime, so we suggest you stop watching that Nick Cave video for long enough to grab all this action. The-Dream — “Slow It Down” The idea of slowing it down has rather defined honey-voiced neo-R&B aficionado The-Dream’s entire career, and he’s in fine form here. “I know they’re not gonna play this on top 40 radio,” proclaims the song’s intro, “But the white girls [are] still gonna ride it like a rodeo.” Well, quite. 10 New Must-Reads for February. Ladies and gentlemen, it’s getting cold out there. February is our traditional hibernation time, so as far as we’re concerned, for the next month we’ll be eschewing nightlife and staying inside with various hot beverages and various room-temperature books.

This month, we’re looking forward to blistering essays, masterful short stories, incredible debut novels, and a posthumous book from Maurice Sendak. Sounds good right? But as we all know, February’s a short month, so you’d better get cracking. Let us know what you’re most excited to read over the next few weeks in the comments. Wise Men, Stuart Nadler (February 5) Way back in August, a certain Ms. The Best-Selling Books in 10 Countries Around the World. 10 Books That Could Save Your Life. This week marked the release of Reality Hunger author David Shields’ newest book, How Literature Saved My Life, a wonderfully meandering meditation on reading, writing, and the reason for art. Shields is very well read (as one might assume), and part of the pleasure of reading this book is watching him pick apart his favorite writing and piece it back together, perhaps in a different way than originally intended. On the occasion of the book’s publication, we offer ten books that just might save your life — some of which Shields mentioned in his latest, some of which are our own favorites.

Of course, every life is different, and the books that seem revolutionary to us may have just come at the right moment, or in the right color. So if we’ve missed your lifesaver here, do tell us all about it in the comments. Leaving the Atocha Station, Ben Lerner. 10 MP3s You Need to Download for Free This Week: Stars, Four Tet. None of this will cost you a dime, so we suggest you click through and get downloading ASAP. Stars — You Guys Are All Awesome EP A couple of free songs from Stars?
