Why Has Google Failed on Coupons? Google could have “owned” the coupon space. It clearly doesn’t. But why has Google so badly blown the coupons/deals opportunity is my question? I think the answer lies in the fact that the company neglected to develop a meaningful consumer experience around coupons. It still can, however — and I’m sure is planning to. Until there is a meaningful consumer experience around deals/coupons on Google (online and/or in mobile) it’s unlikely that it’s going to be able to sell SMBs on coupon creation. Super. Non. Ah ! On-The-Go Mobile Coupons: Almost As Cool As Minority Report. Not. In the Steven Spielberg movie Minority Report (yes, I make some reference to it about once a week), there’s a scene in which John Anderton (Tom Cruise’s character) is walking through an urban retail center and his eyes are getting scanned as he moves, which is serving up custom greetings and deals from retailers. It’s both creepy and cool. But that movie is set in 2054, we’re not there yet. But AT&T had a demo at its Tech Showcase today that is inching closer to that. As you can see in the video below, the idea behind AT&T’s system is that you can walk around a city with a phone in your pocket and get alerted when a nearby retailer has a deal for you. Users of Foursquare and soon Loopt will recognize this concept, but AT&T’s idea is a bit different.

Naturally, this could get very annoying to a consumer if they don’t like the place offering the deal, but customization is the key to this. [image: Dreamworks & 20th Century Fox] Google Brings Local Business Coupons to U.S. Mobile Users. Google has announced today that, just in time for holiday shopping, they are enabling local retailers to display coupons for in-store use on mobile devices of Google-searching users. Any business using Google Local Business Center can upload mobile coupon offers, and any user searching on Google.com using a mobile device can find the coupons on the businesses’ Place Pages – a feature that also debuted relatively recently.

Altogether, the direction the company is taking seems better for users and for local businesses, as well. Printable coupons have long been available on Google Maps, but – let’s face it – more and more consumers have abandoned the desktop/printer paradigm for a more mobile/digital approach to search, on-the-go directions and local business research. Place Pages for the desktop have also been revamped to ensure that mobile and printed coupons will share a common look and feel, regardless of the device, the OS or the browser in which they originated.
