The rationale for visualizing geospatial data in 3D very much resonates with me and in my opinion becomes particularly compelling when analyzing crisis mapping data. This is why I invited my GeoTime colleague Adeel Khamisa to present their platform at the first International Conference on Crisis Mapping (ICCM 2009). Adeel used the Ushahidi-Haiti data to demonstrate the added value of using a 3D approach, which you can watch in the short video below. Earlier this year, I asked Adeel whether he might be interested in analyzing the Libya Crisis Map data using GeoTime.

Was ursprünglich als einmaliges Projekt geplant war lief letztlich so erfolgreich, dass es fortgeführt wurde und bereits bei Erdbeben in Haiti und Chile enorme Hilfe geleistet hat.
Ushahidi. Ushahidi, meaning “testimony” in Swahili, is a crowdsourcing platform that collects and visualizes citizen-reported information to increase public awareness and empower accountability.
Why We Invested Ushahidi’s open source technology platform crowdsources verified information submitted by citizens via SMS messaging or the Internet. Omidyar Network’s investment will enable Ushahidi to establish a Nairobi base with an expanded team; develop new technologies to enhance its platform; and grow its partnerships with media organizations and NGOs. Ushahidi’s platform gathers information from a variety of locations, which is then verified by administrators and visualized on a map or a timeline.
Previous applications of the technology range from monitoring elections in the Congo, India, and Mexico to tracking the availability of medical supplies in Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, and Zambia. Jeder kann Informationen zur Lage vor Ort per SMS oder via Internet schicken, Ushahidi sammelt die Informationen und visualisiert sie auf einer Karte. So bekommt man einen Überblick, wo mögliche Opfer zu finden sind, wo dringend Wasser benötigt wird oder wo Unruhen stattfinden. Auch Umweltkatastrophen wie im Golf von Mexiko, Wahlergebnisse oder Menschenrechtsverstöße können auf Karten visualisiert werden. Die kostenlose Software können auch Hilfsorganisationen auf ihren Webseiten einbinden. Hunderte Meldungen erhielt Ushahidi beispielsweise nach dem Erdbeben in Haiti. Ushahidi entstand Anfang 2008 während der Unruhen nach den kenianischen Wahlen – ursprünglich als einmaliges Projekt.

Backtracking to what exactly crowdsourcing is, it can be generically defined as: “The act of outsourcing tasks, traditionally performed by an employee or contractor, to an undefined, large group of people or community (a “crowd”), through an open call” (Wikipedia).
