5 Problems Music Can Create. I am a strong believer in the incredible and varied effect music can have on us. I believe in its ability to shape our brains and our selves. It's for this reason that I started both my children in piano lessons just shy of their fifth birthdays. Music is the vocational passion of my life and it's what I'm building my career on. As a music therapist, I have been able to harness music's influence on our brains and our selves to effect amazing clinical change. It has made the walking patterns of those who've had strokes more fluid, faster, and stronger. It's given me a direct connection to a child in the throes of a "fighting" stress response, allowing me to bring the child back to a calm, regulated state. Music has many benefits both in general and as clinically facilitated by a trained music therapist. 1) Overstimulation If you want to see me cringe, show me a picture of an infant wearing headphones or an expectant mother lovingly holding headphones around her belly. 2) Hearing Loss.

Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are the conventional weapons used to battle cancer, but now Greenville Health System is adding music therapy to the mix. GHS’s Center for Integrative Oncology and Survivorship has offered complementary therapies for some time, including yoga, massage and acupuncture. Music therapy is a pivotal addition, said center manager Gina Franco. “There is a whole movement of integrative therapy where patients are finding these things outside of hospitals,” she said.

“It makes sense that we should try to offer them with our treatments.” Nationally, more than 1.6 million new cases of cancer are expected to be diagnosed this year, according to the American Cancer Society. And because cancer remains the second most common cause of death in the country, according to the society, getting a diagnosis of cancer is naturally fraught with fear and uncertainty. “There is a fair amount of trauma that comes with a cancer experience,” Franco said. Seed money Starting small. The New "Happy," A Protest Anthem. Although I initially liked the song, my feelings about Pharrell William's Oscar-nominated hit "Happy" had been moving towards how I feel about the 1990s version of "Killing Me Softly with His Song. " So over-played that I immediately felt drawn to change the radio station once I heard the opening notes. But I recently read an article that is prompting me to re-think this peppy pop tune.

It seems that "Happy" is being transformed into a protest song, an anthem for people who live in chaos, challenging times, and political turmoil. It's turning into a symbol of their spirit and their resilience under difficult circumstances. This movement is being documented through music videos created by people from areas such as Tunis, Moscow, and the Ukraine in response to the hardships they are facing. "Happy" seems an unlikely choice for a protest song. If you broaden the definition of "protest song" you will find moments documented in history of when music brought together dissenting factions. If you’re a football fan, you probably felt like this year’s Super Bowl was a dud. Unless you’re a Seahawks fan. Or a sadist. But the commercials never fail to disappoint, right? At a price of $4 million dollars for a 30-second spot, they sure better be good. We’ve talked about the fact that music therapy is a small field, which also leads to lower funding for music therapy programs.

That’s slowly turning around. So what if…music therapy had enough money to run a Super Bowl ad? Well, it had better be good, right? 1. So I've decided that my run in the Baltimore Running Festival Half Marathon this year will be to raise money for the American Music Therapy Association. I'll be running 13.1 miles on Oct.12th, and I'm asking you to sponsor and root for me every mile, by donating $13.10 to AMTA! [yep, totally stole this idea from Professor Andrew Knight :] But! I'm taking this to the next level, by asking you to sponsor my running playlist for me! Say, for example, you have a song you want me to listen to on race day, and the song is 5 mins. Just leave the artist name and song title in the comment section when you donate! Donate $1 a mile, and $1 a minute, of my hard-earned sweat and energy to AMTA! Why? Meet the Dallas Doctors Using Music for Therapy. Music can be incredibly therapeutic. Whether it's keeping us from road rage during rush hour traffic, helping us fall asleep, or uniting us with others as we sing along at a concert, music has a certain unique healing power. Locally, the Windsor Senior Living facility in Dallas uses music to help people with Alzheimer's disease recall old memories. But music therapy can be helpful to people of all ages. Children's Medical Center Dallas, which has the largest music therapy program in DFW, even utilizes music therapy for the newborns in its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. According to the American Music Therapy Association, music therapy consists of "using music therapeutically to address physical, psychological, cognitive and/or social functioning for patients of all ages.

For some, it might involve a bubble bath, while others may resort to copious amounts of chocolate.

Regardless of what relaxation technique preferences you have, listening to music is usually involved, whether it’s rock music played loudly in the car or a classical symphony hummed as you try to forget your problems. For instance, music therapist Crystal Weaver says they have found that increasing tempo can have a measurable, physiological impact. “Your heart, your pulse, your respirations, begin to match the speed of that music,” she explains. That, in turn, allows medications to do their job more effectively and promote healing. An Ohio State study earlier this year found that for some patients, using headphones to listen to their favorite types of music could lower anxiety and reduce their need for sedatives. “Music is very non-invasive so with other treatment you can have some adverse side effects or it can be detrimental or it’s a very invasive procedure,” Weaver said. Brianna's Favorite Part of MusicWorx | Brianna’s Favorite Part of MusicWorx What is my favorite thing about being an intern at MusicWorx you ask?

This really should be a simple question, but for me it is rather difficult to select just one thing. Being in San Diego is quite amazing, the weather is always stunning, being able to work with a different population every day works on different music therapy skills and having the opportunity to learn from the infamous Barbara Reuer are the normal draws to this internship and company. Don’t get me wrong, I love these aspects as much as anyone else, but my absolute favorite thing about being an intern here at MusicWorx is the people. There are truly some amazing people here. I have had the pleasure of working with patients and clients from all different stages and walks of life that have taught me something about life and about myself. These people have helped me grow so much professionally and personally in such a short time, and to them I am forever grateful. Photo by musictherapyservicesofaustin. Music has been known for its soothing and calming effects as a medical property. The intersection between music and health care has once again been applied in healing therapy for premature babies. This recent multisided research was conducted in 11 hospitals across the country and involved the role of Paul Nolan, the director of music therapy programs at Drexel’s College of Nursing and Health Professions. The music therapy program, established in 1975, is part of the Creative Arts Therapies Department, which includes art, dance and movement, drama, poetry and more. It integrates arts and health sciences. Nolan’s study seeks to use sounds to assist the development of premature babies, who are defined as babies born so young that they have incompletely formed organs or cannot survive on their own.

“With babies, when they’re born, they already have the capability to understand a lot about music,” Nolan said. Another method used is singing. Related Professor delivers talk at health seminar.
