A Neuroscientist Explains How Meditation Changes Your Brain. Do you struggle, like me, with monkey-mind? Is your brain also a little unsettled, restless, capricious, whimsical, fanciful, inconstant, confused, indecisive, or uncontrollable? That’s the definition of “monkey mind” I’ve been given! If you need more motivation to take up this transformative practice, neuroscience research has shown that meditation and mindfulness training can cause neuroplastic changes to the gray matter of your brain. A group of Harvard neuroscientists interested in mindfulness meditation have reported that brain structures change after only eight weeks of meditation practice. Sara Lazar, Ph.D., the study’s senior author, said in a press release, “Although the practice of meditation is associated with a sense of peacefulness and physical relaxation, practitioners have long claimed that meditation also provides cognitive and psychological benefits that persist throughout the day.”

Britta Hölzel, the lead author on the paper says, Sarah Lazar also noted, 10 Amazing Examples of Mind Over Matter. While we often think of our bodies and minds as two distinct entities, it turns out they are much more entwined than we might assume. Researchers are continually finding evidence that the brain has a distinct power to manipulate the body’s physiology.

As these 10 examples show, the mind/body connection can work in our favor or detriment, depending on our knowledge of a situation and our ability to control our thoughts. 10. Drying Sheets Judging by their ability to meditate for hours on end, to abstain from food for days, and their vows of silence, most us would agree that Tibetan Monks have better control over their minds and bodies than the average person. Still, what’s particularly amazing is some of them can control physiological processes, such as blood pressure and body temperature – feats many medical doctors find astounding. During the process the monks were cloaked in wet, cold sheets (49 f / 9.4 c) and placed in a 40 f (4.5 c) room. 9. 8. 7. 6. 5. 4. 3. 2. 1. Child's Own Studio | custom making soft toys with children.

German physicist Heinrich Rubens became a god among nerds in 1905 when he invented a tube that uses fire to visualize standing sound waves. When there is no sound fed into the tube, the flames rise to the same height. When a sound is added into the tube, the waveform actually affects the amount of gas that is fed through each hole. At the point of maximum displacement on the wave (the anti-node), the gas pressure varies.

The pressure is highest when the wave crests and the gas is pushed closer to the hole, which forces more fuel out and causes the flame to grow higher. When the wave pushes down into the trough, it can’t really suck the gas back in. The part of the wave which crosses the midline and remains unchanged is referred to as the node. Of course, volume plays a big role on how these flames appear. Derek Muller from Veritasium traveled to Denmark in order to check out an updated version of the Rubens tube. The results are pretty amazing.

Scientific Proof Thoughts And Intentions Can Alter The World Around Us. Dr. Masaru Emoto, a researcher and alternative healer from Japan has given the world a good deal of evidence of the magic of positive thinking. He became famous when his water molecule experiments featured in the 2004 film, What The Bleep Do We Know? His experiments demonstrate that human thoughts and intentions can alter physical reality, such as the molecular structure of water. Given that humans are comprised of at least 60% water, his discovery has far reaching implications… can anyone really afford to have negative thoughts or intentions? The studies A group of approximately 2,000 people in Tokyo focused positive intentions toward water samples located inside an electromagnetically shielded room in California. Ice crystals formed from both sets of water samples were blindly identified and photographed by an analyst, and the resulting images were blindly assessed for aesthetic appeal by 100 independent judges.

Share on Facebook One day Rose-Lynn Fisher wondered if her tears of grief would look different compared to her tears of joy, so she began to explore them up close under a microscope. She studied 100 different tears and found that basal tears (the ones that our body produces to lubricate our eyes) are drastically different from the tears that happen when we are chopping onions. The tears that come about from hard laughter aren’t even close to the tears of sorrow. Like a drop of ocean water each tiny tear drop carries a microcosm of human experience. Tears from laughing until crying Rose-Lynn Fisher Tears of change Tears of grief Tears from onions Joseph Stromberg of the Smithsonian’s Collage of Arts and Sciences explained that there are three major types of tears: basal, reflex, and psychic (triggered by emotions).

Empathy. ~ Susan Frybort {Poem} Via Susan Fryborton Mar 25, 2014 Today I woke feeling my ordinariness next to me. I never wrote a masterpiece, painted a perfect landscape or played an etude. I cannot beat the African healing drum like a shaman to intercede between the realms.

I don’t know how to touch people to resolve them of all their inner conflict or traumas. I never looked into a crystal and saw the divine… I’m not a psychologist, a therapist, a counselor or a saint. And Das is not part of my name, my name is ordinary. As I thought about how the opportunity to tend to a painful wound as if it were an injured plant or delicately administer soothing salve to another earthly soul would not be mine because I do not possess the official requirements, I felt a particular sadness, as though I were, somehow, not enough. Then suddenly I remembered everything is well within me. For I know that all my certainties and all that has ever been established before me are in sacred correspondence.

And that is good enough for me. Perhaps the only thing cuter than an adorable household pet is an adorable household pet curled up for a nap with their favorite plushie toy. There’s nothing like an animal cuddling with the toys we loved in our early childhoods to get the cuteness juices flowing. The actual reasons for which animals cuddle up with or play with stuffed animals can vary greatly. For some, it can simply be a source of soft warmth to keep them feeling safe during their naptime. For others, these stuffed animals can represent prey. This is especially apparent in dogs, which can sometimes thrash their plush animals around or rip them when they play. Nikola Tesla said it best, “the day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence.

To understand the true nature of the universe, one must think it terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” Swami Vivekananda influenced Tesla’s work, an Indian Hindu monk and chief disciple of the 19th century saint Ramakrishna.
