I went to a bunch of the art fairs in florida on friday and sunday of last week (taking saturday off to check out the everglades). the fairs were packed with art galleries (and art), collectors, artists, gawkers. it looked like work was selling and the fairs generally went well for all involved. my understanding is that these fairs are very helpful for galleries in cities like san francisco - where the locals generally do not buy much art - to find buyers from around the world. i saw a lot of work from artists i know and a lot from artists who are new to me. below are some highlights (in the order that i saw them). a 10'x4' yoon lee (at dckt contemporary, yoon lee posted a nice detail photo here) timothy tompkins (also at dckt) travis somerville (above at trillium press, also at nathan larramendy gallery) michael waugh (illustration with text reminds me of a brilliant piece i saw in the national museum in taiwan from some time back) marcel dzama (at richard heller gallery)
