How to Study for SAT Critical Reading. Many people find the passage-based questions to be the most difficult portion of the exam. And in a sense, Critical Reading is the most difficult section of the exam to study for, and certainly the least possible to cram for. Unlike Math and (multiple choice) Writing, which are based on your understanding of and ability to apply a finite number of rules, Critical Reading tests your ability to make inferences and draw conclusions based on information not explicitly stated in a text. This point cannot be stressed enough: the SAT does not simply test your ability to find bits of factual information in a passage, but rather your ability to understand how the structure of a text and the language that the author uses contribute to its meaning.

You are not only reading to determine 'what' a text says, but also 'how' the text says it. In fact, the correct answers to most questions will virtually never be stated word-for-word in the text. If you don’t read on a regular basis, though, start. Utopia – Dystopia « Mrs. Follis's Teacher Page. Copy of Harrison Discussion - "Google Docs" "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. A classic in modern literature, "The Lottery" did more in nine pages than most novels do in nine chapters. Here's how Shirley Jackson outraged a nation with fewer than 3,500 words. Spoiler alert: this article reveals the ending of "The Lottery".

If you haven't read it, hop to it! It'll take 15 minutes, tops. In 1948, The New Yorker published the most controversial short story in its history: "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, a 31-year-old wife and mother living in Vermont. "The Lottery" was published at a time when America was scrambling for conformity. Shirley Jackson was not the kind of person you'd expect to be a literary firebrand. After graduating from Syracuse, the two got married and moved to New York City, where Jackson gave birth to the first of her four children. As soon as Jackson got home, she wrote the 3,378 words of "The Lottery.

" Her husband quickly recognized the story was genius, and Jackson sent it on to her editor at The New Yorker. Then the lottery begins. With New Standards, Going Beyond Paper and Pencil to License Teachers. Heidi Schumann for The New York Times “It is very analogous to authentic assessments in other professions,” said Raymond L.

Pecheone, a Stanford professor who leads the center that developed the new standards. Michael Appleton for The New York Times Michael Mulgrew, president of the New York City teachers’ union, said he favored making licensing requirements tougher. The change is an attempt to ensure that those who become teachers not only know education theories, but also can show the ability to lead classrooms and handle students of differing abilities and needs, often amid limited resources. It is also a reaction to a criticism of some teachers’ colleges, which have been accused of minting diplomas but failing to prepare teachers for the kind of real-world experience where creativity and flexibility can be the keys to success.

The new licensing standards will be required next year in Washington State and have been committed to in Minnesota. A History of New York in 50 Objects. Arkive - mammals - birds - reptile. Four Strategies to Spark Curiosity via Student Questioning. British archaeologist Mary Leakey described her own learning as being "compelled by curiosity. " Curiosity is the name we give to the state of having unanswered questions. And unanswered questions, by their nature, help us maintain a learning mindset.

When we realize that we do not know all there is to know about something in which we are interested, we thirst. We pursue. Strategy One: Equip Students to Ask Questions At its essence, curiosity is asking questions and pursuing answers. We often ask students if they have any questions, but we rarely teach them how to ask advantageous questions.

Strategy Two: Provide a Launch Pad Even if students have mastered the full range of question forming, it is difficult to inquire about topics with which they have no familiarity. Strategy Three: Cast a Wide Net During the information gathering phase of learning, the brain does its best work in an active and receptive state. Keep the search active by praising student efforts to discover novelty. Boundary Bay BC, CA Weather Detailed 5 & 7 Day Long Range Forecast. The Tragic Irony of Fahrenheit 451 Fahrenheit 451 Essays. The Tragic Irony of Fahrenheit 451 " 'Happiness is important. Fun is everything. And yet I kept sitting there saying to myself, I'm not happy, I'm not happy.' " (70). Fahrenheit 451 is one of the most famous of Ray Bradbury's novels. Originally published in 1953, it portrays a futuristic world in the midst of a nuclear war.

The totalitarian government of this future forbids its people to read books or take part in any activity which promotes individual thought. The ideal of this future man is to be happy. " 'What do we want in this country, above all? That right? People say. Them fun? " 'We have mobilized a million men. At the beginning of the book, Montag appears happy. After the house is burned, Montag begins to walk home and is met by a young girl named Clarisse McClellan. He then goes into his house and enters the bedroom. "He felt his smile slide away, melt, fold over and down on itself like a tallow skin, like the stuff of a fantastic candle burning too long and now not happy.

Studynotes: Fahrenheit 451: Summary: Part 1 (II) Part 1 (II) Montag goes into his own dark house, still thinking about Clarisse's question. When he opens his bedroom door, everything is cold and quiet. As usual, his wife, Mildred, is asleep in bed, with a pair of tiny radios -- called "Seashells" -- in her ears. The Seashells are always "talking" to her, so she doesn't have to think about or pay attention to the world around her. In fact, even when Mildred is asleep, she can still hear the voices in her head. In this cold room, Montag feels his smile disappearing. Montag accidentally kicks a small object, which rolls away under the bed. Two emergency medical workers, who Montag has never seen before, come to pump out Mildred's stomach and give her a blood transfusion.

After the medical technicians leave, Montag stare out the window, to Clarisse's lit-up house, and wishes he could go over and talk to them -- he even wanders out onto the lawn. In the morning, Montag tries to talk to her about what happened the night before. Fahrenheit - 3 Guy Montag. Fahrenheit 451: Part 3 (Burning Bright) | LitCharts.com. Montag advises Faber on how to eliminate Montag's scent from the house by burning things, wiping others with alcohol, and turning on the sprinklers in the yard. Montag takes a suitcase with Faber's old clothes, bids farewell, and leaves the house, heading toward the river. On the way he's able to track the Hound's approach by looking at TVs through the windows of houses. The Hound stops at Faber's house, but moves on. On his Seashell radio, Montag hears the announcer tell everyone in the neighborhood to step outside of their houses and look for the fugitive.

Since everyone's TV is tuned to the chase, Montag is able to be both fugitive and audience at the same time. Great Schools for Students with Learning Disabilities. No Student Left Untested by Diane Ravitch. Last week, the New York State Education Department and the teachers’ unions reached an agreement to allow the state to use student test scores to evaluate teachers. The pact was brought to a conclusion after Governor Andrew Cuomo warned the parties that if they didn’t come to an agreement quickly, he would impose his own solution (though he did not explain what that would be). He further told school districts that they would lose future state aid if they didn’t promptly implement the agreement after it was released to the public.

The reason for this urgency was to secure $700 million promised to the state by the Obama administration’s Race to the Top program, contingent on the state’s creating a plan to evaluate teachers in relation to their students’ test scores. The new evaluation system pretends to be balanced, but it is not. The New York press treated the agreement as a major breakthrough that would lead to dramatic improvement in the schools.

Grouping Students l Leveled Texts l What Others Do l Teacher Resources Guided reading is a strategy that helps students become good readers. The teacher provides support for small groups of readers as they learn to use various reading strategies (context clues, letter and sound relationships, word structure, and so forth).

Although guided reading has been traditionally associated with primary grades it can be modified and used successfully in all grade levels. For example, older students may need to learn new strategies to understand how to read an information book in a way that is going to give them access to the information they are seeking. "In primary grades children are learning to read and in upper grades they are reading to learn. " What is its purpose? When the proper books are selected, students are able to read with approximately 90% accuracy.
