Twitter announced Wednesday that 50,000 applications have been built around its microblogging platform in the past two years, according to news reports. Ryan Sarver, Twitter's director of platform, made the disclosure while presenting at LeWeb conference in Paris. There was only one third party Twitter application taking advantage of the service's open feeds, Sarver said. Sarver said that Twitter is planning to allow developers access to the so-called "firehose" of Twitter data, the company will teach developers how to build Twitter applications and Twitter will hold a developers conference called "Chirp" in 2010. Le Web: YouTube to create sport hub - Telegraph

The YouTube ‘Sports Hub’ is being launched in partnership with SportAccord, the representative of institutional sport worldwide that groups together 104 World Sports Federations, including, basketball, swimming and the Paralympics. Whilst talking to LeWeb founder and blogger Loic Le Meur at the LeWeb, Hurley revealed that the next big change for YouTube would be improved discovery tools for videos and content creators on YouTube. "We need a better search for YouTube," said Hurley. He explained that while YouTube gives everyone the chance to put their videos on the video-sharing site it can be difficult to locate relevant content.

Paris, France (CNN) -- The future of social networking, the real-time Web and a host of apps and gadgets were the talk of the annual Le Web conference as it opened here Wednesday. The phenomenal success of microblogging site Twitter and its plans for the future dominated the two-day event's opening sessions for bloggers and industry leaders, held in a converted morgue in the city's northeastern suburbs. Top executives from Twitter faced off with rivals from Facebook and MySpace as all three social media sites unveiled technical innovations designed to capture more users. On the heels of Twitter founder Jack Dorsey's unveiling of Square, a device that accepts credit card payments on cell phones, Twitter platform director Ryan Sarver said the site now has 50,000 dedicated applications making use of its constant stream of blog updates. Sarver also announced the company's "firehose" feature, which throws open its data stream to any developers who want to use it.
