Harry McCracken reports that the final version of the Digital Publishing Suite will be available in the second quarter of 2011, but Adobe is offering it now to publishers who want to try it out. The software is the basis of the publishing platform that powers the Wired and The New Yorke r iPad apps. McCracken writes that having built-in analytics tools could provide a “gold mine” of information for data-hungry publishers trying to figure out how readers interact with content on digital tablets: “If you use the suite to produce tablet versions of your magazine, you can use the analytics service to get a bevy of information about how they’re being read — all aggregated and anonymized to avoid privacy issues. You can see whether readers are opening the issues they’ve bought.

http://medea.mah.se/2011/01/social-curation-of-news/ For the past few months, I’ve spent a few hours every week on Twitter looking for scholars, PhDs, post-grad students etc within the field of new media (broadly speaking). The reason for this is the idea of social curation of news, a concept that is gaining more and more traction the more time we spend online liking, bookmarking, sharing, tweeting and retweeting articles that we – for any reason – find interesting. It used to be the task of daily newspapers and television news shows to select from and condense massive amounts of information into digestible and finite units of news. While they still do this, consumers today have alternatives. If we used to have corporate curation of news, today we also have a social curation of news. What is your Twitter feed if not socially curated news?

Real-Time News Curation - The Complete Guide Part 4: Process, Key Tasks, Workflow

I have received a lot of emails from readers asking to illustrate more clearly what the actual typical tasks of a news curator are, and what are the tools that someone would need to use to carry them out. In Part 4 and 5 of this guide I am looking specifically at both the workflow, the tasks involved as well as at the attributes, qualities and skills that a newsmaster, or real-time news curator should have. 1. In the form of comments, reviews, photographs, videos, presentations and ratings, social media content is growing at an exponential rate, despite the fact that 90% of visitors lurk . Further, Forrester Research found that, the growth of social media creators, as a group, is holding steady. Added to this is the challenge that by their nature digital experiences are fragmented.

I am a bit of a stickler for words. Not like some people, who are super serious about it, but I get very annoyed when people throw words around carelessly. Innovation is a good one and I get in arguments every other day about whether “intent” in relation to web economics and marketing means what people mean it to mean (most of the time it doesn’t). The newest one is curation. I’m a bit less sure about this, but I have a feeling that all these people throwing it around are using it incorrectly. http://www.noahbrier.com/quickies/2011/01/curator_really.php
