This document aims to describe how to provide peer-to-peer network communication in the case where both peers are each behind an individual NAT device. This is possible by using a central server for authentication and matchmaking purposes, but once connections are established, the server gets out of the loop and no bandwidth is expended on the server. First, some assumptions just to make the explanation clear: The client has local IP address 10.0.1.1 and is said to "live behind" the thing providing NAT services (firewalling or connection sharing. Let's call the client "Joe". The server has global ("real") IP address 20.0.2.2, and runs a service of some sort on port 2345 which is generally accessible from the internet at large.

C'est bien beau de passer par du HTTPS pour chiffrer une communication entre votre machine et un site internet (par exemple Gmail) mais vos communications DNS elles, restent transparentes si un système de DPI vous espionne ou si un pirate tente de faire un peu de spoofing DNS ou une attaque de type Man In The Middle sur vous. C'est pour cela que OpenDNS a sorti un outil baptisé DNSCrypt qui permet d'ajouter une couche supplémentaire de sécurité en chiffrant tout simplement le trafic DNS. L'outil disponible pour le moment, uniquement sous Mac OSX, est ultra simple à utiliser et ne demande aucune intervention complexe de l'utilisateur. Il suffit de cocher les cases "Enable OpenDNS" pour utiliser les serveurs d'OpenDNS et/ou de cocher "Enable DNSCrypt" pour activer le chiffrement DNS.
