EdTech is No Longer Optional

Opinion among educators is predictably in favor of educational technology in the classroom, with a whopping 96% believing that it increases student engagement in learning. Heck, 89% of teachers believe that the use of ed-tech improves student outcomes in the classroom. This is probably why we are seeing an increased use of learning management systems, ipads, and various apps in K-12 settings. However, despite all the positive opinion and praise that the cutting-edge edtech offerings receive, one study has found that there are fewer teachers who actually use these tools on a frequent basis.

Even though 92% agree that they would like to use more edtech in the classroom, they are running into challenges – most notably: money, access, and time. The lack of funds pieces is very real, no arguing there as school districts are just plain strapped for cash. NSW Education Project: using Thinglink. eBOS Shop Online. A flipped classroom is a different approach for traditional classwork and homework. In the flipped model, a teacher will record or post video lectures instead of lecturing in class, and then student will watch the lectures as homework on a computer or mobile device. This frees up class time to be spent on various activities and practicing the skills while the teacher guides students through the exercises.

Relatively new a decade ago, learning management systems, mobile devices, and social sharing networks makes this concept a reality. In fact, according to one study (see infographic below provided by WeAreTeachers), despite the new technology, 70% of teachers have not yet flipped their classroom. The research organization worked in conjunction with Microsoft Partners in Learning and the Pearson Foundation to interview 1,014 people ages 18-35 with varying levels of education, asking them to recall their last year of school. Only 22 percent of students with a high school education or less say teachers prompted them to apply what they learned to a real-world problem, according to the report.

Additionally, roughly one-third reported learning about other cultures and teaming up with classmates on projects. While technology use was common among these students, only 3 percent said they used video conferencing, discussion boards or collaborative tools such as Skype.
