DOWNHILL SKIING IN THE LAURENTIANS, PART 2: MOVING NORTH

(Photo - Farfan Collection)The 1930s and 40s saw great growth in what was fast becoming a skiing industry in the Laurentians. Emphasis shifted from private clubs and university groups to larger, European-style resorts and smaller village boarding houses that offered access to more people. By 1950, with improvements to the roads, people were renting houses for the winter ski season in the same way they had been renting for summer seasons since the early 1900s.

By the mid-1950s, many second homes were being used year-round and many more people were moving permanently to the Laurentians. It is an exciting cross between a magic carpet and ‘soulsease’. There is something about the opening sequence with Ian’s voice in the air, as the quiet calm just launches you into all the glory Ian has found and portrayed in the Thousand Islands. It is enormously fun to go with Ian on his life’s journey, across the skies and the refurbishment of Raleigh. It has been a flight of many discoveries, fascinating and beguiling, from the thousands of crunchy carapaces on the floor of the abandoned cottage he bought, to Half Moon Bay and Gus.

It doesn’t take much perusing to know you want to fly like Ian does. The story grabs you but the photos take your breath away! This beautiful app is already wrapped and gorgeous for you to open and discover and love. By Judy & Chas Cochand, Brook Farm, Blissford nr. Cochand, Pierre. These officers, as pilots of fighter planes, participated in numerous attacks on enemy installations in the Aleutians which were pressed home despite heavy anti-aircraft fire and often under adverse weather conditions. All flights were made from advanced bases and required skilful airmanship for a successful execution of the mission. The courage and devotion to duty of these officers reflect great credit upon themselves and the organization of which they are a part.
