It presents scientific information and examples of technological practice within narrative contexts that reflect real-life problems, experiences, and progress. The Gift of Rongoā presents a three-part narrative through which students can explore traditional Māori healing in historical and contemporary contexts. In particular, the book explores examples of fusion between Māori and Western knowledge bases, both scientific and technological. In this regard, The Gift of Rongoā is a useful starting point for Nature of Science and Nature of Technology discussions and activities. Links with Other Books in the Applications Series There are strong links between The Gift of Rongoā and Lips, Lipids, and Locks, also published in 2005. The Gift of Rongoā also links with the theme of Māori health and medical research, as explored in The Gene Seekers, which was published in 2001. Click image to enlarge Reading the Narrative.

DR SHAUN OGILVIEI’m a Māori business development consultant, so the work involves making connections between people, and in my case, the people are the science people within Cawthron and Māori organisations, so Māori communities, Māori groups that have an interest or a need for science and research.

I have a PhD in marine biology. I come from a Māori background and that’s kind of who I am, so I guess there’s those interpersonal skills that go with that, that are part of it – not really official qualifications but just being a people person, really, is an important part of it. And wanting to kind of work in that people arena, not necessarily being keen to being locked away in a corner somewhere looking down a microscope. I think it’s really important that scientists forge strong relationships with the local communities and with iwi in particular. There’s a few reasons for that but the main one is that it makes the science relevant to the people. Www.mkta.co.nz/assets/educationpurposev.4.pdf. CAD Wiki: Maori Learning and Teaching Hub.
