For those who have been lucky enough to enjoy an international education, or have taken exams like the IB or IGCSE in English, this might not be necessary. However, for some, even if they have studied at the best local schools, an ESL (English as a Second Language) qualification may be necessary. There are several ways to do this that most students will be familiar with - the IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC and Cambridge adult examinations (the FCE, CAE or CPE, for example) are just a few - but what is the difference between each exam? All applicants are required to demonstrate that they have sufficient ability to understand and express themselves in both spoken and written English in order to benefit fully from their degree programme. Your chosen programme will specify one of six language ‘profiles’. You may give evidence of your ability to meet the language requirement through a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as IELTS or TOEFL, or you may hold other qualifications in English which also meet our requirements. If you do not hold one of the required qualifications you will need to take a Secure English Language Test and pass at the level indicated. You do not necessarily need to have achieved the required level before applying, as you may be offered a place conditional on reaching it before you join the University. You do not need to have the required marks when you apply, but they would form a condition of any offer that you received, and would have to be achieved before your arrival at LSE. In each case we require the test of English for Academic Purposes. Your test should be no more than two years old by 1 October in the year you intend to start your programme. Other tests may be acceptable if you have already taken them, but conditions attached to offers will be set as required scores in either the IELTS or TOEFL.
