February is also the month when many celebrate Valentine’s Day—a day devoted to love. Young students pass out small greeting cards bought in bulk to all their classmates, and older students have “Heartgrams” delivered to each other during the class period before lunch time. If you’re a teacher (or think back to your K–12 school days), what feelings does this day invoke? There are lots of hugs, smiles, and laughter (and candy), and more importantly, feelings of being cared for, seen, cherished, liked, admired, and even loved.

Aren’t these emotions we’d like to foster everyday? So why not celebrate and practice kindness intentionally in our classrooms and schools more routinely? Kick-Start Kindness: Activities 1. 2. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. There are so many families that are often times struggling during the holidays and it doesn’t help that it seems like everyone else is having a good time. For this McDonalds employee in Decorah, Iowa, the holidays would be just another time for her to realize she wouldn’t be able to afford a gift for her daughter. That’s when one organization decided to step in. KDEC FM 100.5 randomly showed up at this McDonalds and started talking to the employee. What did the radio station do? “She is always smiling and so cheery, like she was this morning…Until we asked what she wanted to get for her daughter this Christmas…Thank you to Decorah Bank & Trust Co. and some Secret Santas for making this hardworking mother’s day!
